Is there no Encanto thread?!

I thought it was fine. Not the best kids movie but definitely not the worst. My 8 and 6 year-old boys have watched it four or five times now. They seem to love it.

That’s something I found fascinating - the slow realization that the abuela is actually abusive - and Mirabel’s first standing up to her and then understanding the trauma that made her that way. Pretty intense for a Disney movie. Everyone who thought it was just cute and forgettable really missed a lot!

Abuela’s reformation at the end is unrealistic, but Disney-satisfying.

We are a half Hispanic family and watching my kid watch it really shows how much representation matters

I think there’s many levels to the movie, which makes it great. Everyone can understand it at a specific and age-appropriate level l think. Some more subtle points didn’t really click with my 6yo but did for my 10yo.

I'm on team it was... ok. Too many intertwine rapidly fired characters. The songs were not memorable, the animation was beautiful. I couldn't make it all the way through the movies with my kids.

The raccoon short really got to me 💔

I’m white and it matters for my DD to see this representation as well. I’m happy that she is seeing movies with people who look like her friends and that she enjoyed it. It’s her favorite movie. What a boring and bland world for those who fail to embrace the richness and beauty of cultures outside their own.

I do think the songs are a bit unimpressive the first time watching it. The characters kind of speak really quickly in song (which I know is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s thing but it makes it hard to understand, especially when the song is actually explaining what’s going on to a 6 year old). But when I watched the movie a second time I really loved the Dos Orgunitos song (so beautiful) and we don’t talk about Bruno is soooo catchy.

The song Surface Pressure hits so close to home for me as the older sister with a mostly dysfunctional family. In talking with other friends with similar-aged kids who have also seen it, many of the moms feel the same. I read that Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote it for his older sister, and I’m grateful to him for capturing the feeling so well.

Omg, same. Surface pressure really hit me. I’ve been playing it on repeat since I saw the movie.

I really liked it the first time. Now that my kid has watched it or listened to it 8,000 times I'm over it. Encanto is the new Frozen and now I would like for it to go away. If I have to hear We Don't Talk About Bruno one more time...

I liked it MUCH more than Frozen. My kindergartener is enthralled too.

We really liked it. We also just saw Sing 2, our first such forays back to the theaters since Covid started. I don't know if our bars have dropped after not seeing movies in the theater for so long or what but we loved them both.
