I don't think I found the cultural aspects of the family charming. The control freak grandmother was an undermining a-hole. I guess lots of people can relate to a matriarch like that but she annoyed the hell out of my family when we watched.
Well, that was a cultural aspect only insofar as generational trauma has occurred to some cultures more than others. The point was that she was an undermining a-hole and Mirabel was the only one who could see it. She was fundamentally a loving but damaged person, and Mirabel was the one to realize that their entire family was built on a shaky foundation because of Abuela’s trauma. By the end Abuela has had insight into why she’s been such an a-hole, and is trying to do better. I think she’s an interesting character. When the candle provides the miracle, everyone else is safe and happy but she is still heartbroken and grieving. The art for that part is so affecting, she looks almost gray with grief. She’s the only one with a ”door” who also doesn’t have any powers The miracle has accrued to the rest of her family but not her. At the end she realizes that the miracle is her family’s survival, not their magic, and so she’s part of it too.
