You people have no idea what you are talking about and I say this as the adult child of an alcoholic. Reserve your sympathy for these children, not their garbage mother.

Op, you sound like a wonderful person and I am sure you are making a positive impact for these kids. I also appreciate that you are honoring their wishes not to have to deal with their mother.

I say this as an adult child of alcoholics: my parents were not garbage. They both had mental illnesses, one had terrible trauma, one had multiple addictions. At various times throughout my childhood both were neglectful, one was openly abusive. They both hurt me and my brothers a LOT. The trauma has lasted decades.

But they are not garbage. They are my mother and father, who were sick and had addictions.
