Considering you are asking, I'm going to assume you mean HHI of 200k-300k. So here it goes. .

1) Buy most expensive new build you qualify for. It must be a new build.

2) Be sure to use every opportunity to post photos about the new build on FB, and keep that free tote the builder gives you handy on display. So people are reminded you bought a new build.

3) Buy a black SUV. 2 is better.

4) Be frumpy. Old Navy, Marshalls, etc.

5) Express your dislike about everything at every gathering.

6) Gain weight.

7) Be a bad host. If you invite people over, let them starve, save a plate of cookies. Can add few carrot sticks for show.

8) Humble brag about anything work related. Speech? promotion? business trip? team? Every little bit helps!

Not rich.

That my DHs income and we live in the South and that’s not rich here. Thats pretty middle class in DC.

Where is the cool lunch spot?
Is there a fancier coffee shop than Rare Baird or Northside Social?
The execs at my company all go to Orange Theory - is there something more $$ and exclusive? Is it SolidCore?
Tinx thinks all rich moms drive g-wagons. I have never seen one of those in Arlington. All I see are Volvo XC-90s with private school stickers. Sometimes I see a Tesla X.
Where do these ladies shop? Old Town? Tysons?
Where do they get their hair done?

My only glimpse of this world is when someone posts on MONA looking for a “house manager”.

G wagons and other flashy cars are not as popular here (my fil used to manage dealerships and agrees). In general the rich/powerful in this area tend to be more low key because they tend to have made their money at very serious, fairly intellectual jobs where people have a serious , wasp sensibility. Even those in jobs found elsewhere are low key. Let’s say you’re a vp of sales at a tech company/-if you are based here, you’re selling mostly to govt so it’s more serious. Let’s say you’re the head of PR firm—here, your clients are much more serious.

Yup. This is exactly right. N. Arlington in particular has the biggest disparity between house prices and the prices of the cars parked out front that I’ve ever seen. You’d look like a complete loser driving around in a G wagon. Even the DHs all drive very reasonable cars… they’re not cruising around in a Maserati.

Nail on head.

This is not even sort of accurate, and also suggests you’re a pretty unpleasant person. And LOL at 300k being “rich” around here.

You’ve never been to NJ I bet? My in laws neighborhood is $2-5m houses and they all have G wagons, Range Rovers, Lamborghini suvs, even a Bugatti. Not just two cars, 4 or 5.

I know plenty of 2 income couples who make $400-$500k. They live in the $1.5-$1.8m new builds. From the conversations I hear, they don’t have a lot saved and generally used up most of their cash to buy these new builds. They are not rich at all. One person making $600k with no childcare costs and public school is living pretty well.

I’d say $500k, but it depends on a lot of factors. You could be “rich” and living a similar lifestyle with less income if you have family wealth, or high visibility/high prestige jobs. By the same token, two incomes of $250k each could feel a lot more stretched than one income of $500k (or even less than $500k) + a SAH parent, because of the increased child care and household needs to support two high earners.

NP. Grew up in NJ. It’s only one step up above from Staten Island in terms of gaudy trashiness.

You just completely made PP’s point. NJ- $2m house, G wagon. North Arlington- $2m house, used Honda Civic

Why are women in DC so proud of looking sloppy, no makeup, sad wardrobe? No one is going to revoke your Cornell law degree if you learn to use a hair tool I promise.

I can only speak for myself. I didn't grow up in this country, and when we immigrated, we were poor. Although we were pretty solidly middle class in our country, there was no emphasis on makeup/hair. As a consequence, I didn't get here with anything akin to knowledge of how to do makeup or hair (for instance), and being working poor, didn't gain that knowledge, nor did I have the time or the money for it. While we were in the wealth generation phase (still there, but getting closer to retirement), we were busy working, and in an field where looks aren't important. So, while I know how to dress professionally, speak well, and in a way that will be taken seriously, I am not in any way that person with perfect hair/nails/makeup. Having gone through the majority of my life not caring overly much about looks, I'm in a place in life were I really don't care.

I'm always surprised by the fancier cars I see parked in driveways in the further out suburbs vs. Arlington. Your house is worth 500k and you have two 70k cars in the driveway? I personally find cars to be an appliance that gets me from point A to point B, so I don't spend much on them... living up to the Arlington stereotype, I guess?
