No need for a second car and this one still runs great.

OP who are you trying to impress? What are you trying to achieve? I'm not being sarcastic. There must be a specific reason you're asking this question.

I think you also meant to ask "how old are you?", OP - because if women are that into impressing others, after a certain age, my God.
NP here
I do not think this is about trying to impress
Or trying to mimic others

Just trying to find one or 2 nice pieces to cover up that you actually are poor. Not to fit in but just to get some self confidence.
Very few people have the confidence to not care and are happy to walk around in clothes that are old, worn out, ugly and they do not like.

Nobody who is rich will think I am one of them. But that is not the point

You are missing the point, actually. Finding one or two flashy pieces financed by debt to cover up your poverty is, like, the definition of poor.

It is exactly about what you tried to claim it wasn't. You contradicted yourself splendidly.

I do not want anything too fancy, just some nice pieces to be able to feel happy and comfortable in awkward situations

Why do you dress nice or ever buy something expensive?

At what price point is a poor person allowed to get themselves something nice

I'm an FCC cool mom who lives in an older house that we won't renovate until we're done paying for daycare. I have a job so I don't get together with friends for lunch or coffee. Instead we occasionally have dinner or drinks at local places like Dominion, Clare & Dons, Dogwood, and Thompson. I use Trunk Club, Stitch Fix, and my Nordstrom stylist for clothes and accessories because I hate shopping. I work out at home. I get my hair done at Salon Sage, my friends go to Nash, Daniel, Hair Social, and the place by Aldi. I drive a Subaru because I wanted a safe car for the kids. My husband has a BMW.

God, I hope this is sarcasm. "Cool mom?" You have just described every basic UMC suburban mom anywhere in the country.

But based on the questions OP asked ("do you go to rare bird coffee or northside social?"), she clearly thinks I'm cool.

I’m not OP and I asked the questions. You, FCC mom, is not who I am interested in hearing about. I live on the Arlington side of the FCC border and I also drive a Subaru, get coffee at Rare Bird, shop at Nordstrom, eat at the same restaurants (swap Thompson for Lyon Hall), get my hair cut by a woman who was trained by Nash. Moms like me are a dime a dozen. That describes everyone I know.

I am curious about the women who live up by Gulf Branch nature center in the $2-3M homes and the women who go to the 10am yoga classes because they don’t work outside the home. I’m curious about the moms who ask on MONA about live-in nannies and house managers. What do those moms do all day? I will never know because a) I live south of Lee Hwy and 2) I have to work during the day.

Please don't get the white SUV.

DP. Needs > desires.

You are right. We all have a need to get at least some of our desires during a lifetime.

Imo the absolute best use of excess funds is horses. They take up a lot of time, they are wonderful and fun, they are healthy, and you can spend literally any amount of money on them.

Also because you can always improve and do harder things, like a sport, but there are also endless related pursuits and challenges for every level of skill and athleticism, like an art form.

The only person I know who dresses like this lives in the far out exurbs and is married to a mechanic.
