I've never been to Ocean City or any of the Delaware Beaches. I've wanted to visit but summer weekend hotel rates are outrageous and I could never justify paying Four Seasons prices for a Hilton Garden Inn experience. I have a bunch of Hyatt points and noticed there is a newish Hyatt Place in Dewey Beach for very few points compared to their $536/night August weekend rate. I told one of my coworkers who has a house in Rehobeth and he warned me not to go and that he doesn't even like to drive through Dewey on the weekends due to all of the drunk college students. We have a toddler so we won't be out at night but I would like to be able to get a good night's sleep. Is it that bad? |
Bethany is the 'family beach'. |
My high school student went for beach week last year and even she was appalled at the number of, and behavior of, the drunk 20 something's. |
It's great when you're 25 and looking for fun...
|
There's a reason they call it "Do Me" beach. |
Bethany is incredibly boring. Rehoboth is much better. |
I've heard its ok for families who tend to go out to the beach in the morning because all the drunks are still sleeping and don't show up until 2 when the families are going in. |
Yes, it is. Don't do it. |
It isn't the college students that would keep me away -- as PPs note, it is pretty quiet on the beach in the mornings. My issue would be that there is virtually no restaurants/ shops, and no boardwalk. It is mostly run-down bars that are open 24 hours a day. I think there was a DQ ages ago but not even sure if that is still there. But 1 mile down at Rehoboth there is a family friendly boardwalk (Funland, mini-golf, ice cream etc etc), cute shops, lots of family restaurants, etc. There is the Jolly Trolly that goes between Dewey and Rehoboh but not sure how frequent it runs. |
The beach at Dewey sucks. It's like 3 foot deep and very steep. |
OP, have you checked Lewes? Quiet, possibly cheaper than Rehoboth, and great beach for little ones. |
Haha. I did the Dewey Do Me thing in my twenties. A total blast. Now that I have a kid, I likely wouldn't go there. But Bethany is boring as heck. |
For a family beach experience, we like Bethany. Walkable, manageable, nice beach, easy playground. We go to Rehobeth a couple times a vacation for Funland, etc. |
try fenwick |
Dewey is for 20 and 30 somethings who are single and looking to mingle. They pile into houses and party like rockstars. The side streets smell like beer and vomit. My kids love driving through Dewey on the way from Bethany (where we stay) to rehoboth (where we go to the boards for rides and games)....we roll the windows down and they enjoy watching the drunks on the sidewalks and in the street as they stumble from bar to bar.
It's not for kids of for grown-ups. |
