The Hyatt Place looks brand spanking new, location next to Rusty Rudder, we almost stayed there because their weekday rates were only like $188. |
How does it compare to Ocean City and Virginia Beach which I've also heard can be gross? |
Sigh. The Rusty Rudder. So many (fuzzy) memories. Agree with PP that I'm glad there were no camera phones back in the day! ![]() |
Don't go to Dewey with a kid. It is as bad as everyone says. It is for singles 20s, 30s and some 40s looking to get as drunk as possible and hook up. It's rowdy and gross, unless you're participating in the shenanigans. Agree the beach isn't that great. Rehoboth is much better. Or even OC for that matter.

Is it that bad? Are any of them that good? |
Dewey is for college kids.
Rehob is for families. OC is a lot of both. |
Do not do it. Hotels are loud. That hotel is right in the path of where all the drunk people will be walking to their hookups. They will be slamming doors and yelling in the hallway. You will be up all night. |
It's fine during the week. I wouldn't go on the weekend. |
Do Lewes, Broadkill or Rehoboth. |
Dewey smells like beer and vomit. Seriously. |
Two years ago, my wife wanted to stop at a restaurant/bar there for lunch for old times sake. It was nearly empty and smelled so strong of beer that I could not take it. Would not go to Dewey with kids. Recently, I spent two days with my son in Ocean City and had a great time, liked it better than Rehoboth though you will get different opinions on this forum. |
My family has owned a house in Dewey for years. Long before it became the drunken mess it is on weekends. We actually still love it. The weekdays are very quiet, the early mornings on the weekends are great. There are a few restaurants we like. But mostly, for activities, we take the Jolly Trolley or drive. We do not walk to anything other than the beach. We make our food in the house. Etc.
It could be more family friendly, but if its the only affordable option.. I would not flat out reject it. Depends on what you are looking for. For my under age 5 kids, its sufficient. When they are older and independent enough to walk around by themselves a bit.. not sure it will be the best. |
I hated it when I was 25. I went once. I will never go again, and I'm not against drunken debauchery. Dewey beach is just utterly low class drunken debauchery. Though --- Bottle and Cork is a lot of fun for concerts. |
Sorry disagree! We stayed at Hyatt Place last year with a 2 year old. PPs are right, the beach is much quieter in the morning because everyone is sleeping, which I consider a positive! Yes there are a ton of 20 somethings walking around but honestly, it's not that bad. And it's a 2 minute ride to Rehoboth, you can take your kid on the trolley to Rehoboth which he will love. It picks up right by the Hyatt Place. If you are like us you are in bed way too early to really be bothered by everyone. All the PPs sound a bit stuck up to me! Go and enjoy! |
It would not bother me at all for a short trip since with kids, we are in bed early. But I'm a pretty laid back traveler. Rehobeth and OC are so close for other attractions, dining wtc |
