Biden's VP?

Anonymous
Isn’t kind of ridiculous that we take such pains to make sure that the process for selecting the Presidential nominee is as democratic as possible, but then we allow the VP to be chosen by *one* person—and we’re all okay with this?

Why shouldn’t the people be allowed to choose the Vice-Presidential nominee as well?

It’s going to be Buttigieg, they’ve already had a few meetings on this.

Gawd that would be a downer.

It will not be two white men. Won't happen.

Why not? What are we going for here? Palin debacle?

I actually think it's going to be Klobuchar, for exactly the same reason. The ticket does not need two white men. His sexuality is not diversity enough at this time. However, after the 2016 debacle, I think adding a woman to the ticket *IS* what the party needs. A woman will help some of the party's tarnished reputation at this point. Buttigieg is no more ready to be VPOTUS than he was ready to be POTUS. And it will NOT do anything to help the party. Klobuchar does have the experience to be VPOTUS and the experience will make her a very strong contender for the nom in 2024 when Biden will step down. Also, female democrats are feeling betrayed right now and this will help make partial amends.

She is so not prime time. Sorry. We have to do better than that. And yes, people will vote straight blue so maybe it doesn’t matter who VP is. But if we need republican votes then don’t go polar opposite Biden here.

Neither Klobuchar or Whitmer are polar opposite. Both have track records of working in purple states and both are from a region that could use the boost from seeing one of their own on the ticket.

Whitmer is more telegenic and personable, seems to have a better temperament. A fresh face would be welcome. MI > MN

I agree .. it's just that people here seem to be attached to Klobuchar for some reason.

At this point more people know Klobuchar because she has been in the spotlight. I think either would be a good pick, but I wonder if Klobuchar is better off staying in the Senate. She’s been a very effective legislator and there’s no reason she couldn’t be majority/minority leader.

Guys, I’m not crazy about Schumer either but a Senator’s standing in a presidential race will not determine whether they become the majority/minority leader. That’s determined by the Senators and there’s very much a line of succession. The next Democratic leader is widely expected to be Patty Murray who is ranked third or Dick Durbin who as the whip is ranked second. So I don’t think this affects where Warren or Klobuchar (who is already in leadership herself) end up.

Any senator in an unsafe seat will have to stay put. There's really no question here.

Minnesota hasn’t elected a Republican to the Senate in 18 years, so I would consider her seat safe.

Also, Minnesota has a Democratic Governor, so any appointee prior to a special election would also be safe. We already did this when Franken stepped down.

It's not worth even a very small risk. Besides MI is the prize.

The betting markets have kamala harris at 5-2, Stacy abrams 4-1 and klobuchar at 5-1. I think klobuchar is more likely that Stacy Abrams but we’ll see. Harris is in safe senate seat. This is her chance to make history.

Harris didn't endorse Biden before the CA primary and doesn't appeal in the states Biden needs: WI-MI-OH-PA. I like her, but she'd be a poor strategic choice and hasn't earned anything from him (unlike several of the other names proposed).

Good point. I think Stacey Abrams will stay on the short list right up to the convention, but she will not be chosen due to her lack of relevant experience. So Klobuchar or Whitmer are probably front-runners at this point. Warren is unlikely but has an outside chance if the party is badly fractured going into the convention and Biden feels like he needs to make a big gesture to generate enthusiasm and get the left fully on board.

Yeah I think you absolutely need to be strategic here and pick someone who will help in the swing states.

The answer is Aaron Burr, Sir.

Whitmer was on MSNBC last night. She's great and I think will be awesome on a ticket with Joe. She's only in her late 40s and will appeal to a ton of Midwesterners and women. Plus, she trounced her GOP opponent in 2018 and has no problem smacking down the GOP controlled legislature in MI. She's been very effective at harnessing the bully pulpit.

She's also very youthful for her age and will compliment Joe nicely. She's also quite attractive, which doesn't hurt her cause.

I'm feeling good about Whitmer. She seems to have the intellectual chops and is great at retail politics.

Totally agree. The fact that she's very attractive does not hurt. Even 45 would find it hard to demean her.
