While I’d prefer a federal ban on gerrymandering, the Republicans will never go for that.

That sounds nice, but you need to realize that there is not a trick too dirty, no bar too low for MAGA. They will do whatever it takes to keep Dems from voting, so they can avoid repercussions for their actions.

If you read the bills proposed by Dems, they said no "partisan" gerrymandering but insisted that minorities be able to choose their preferred candidates. So, that sounds a lot like they were suggesting racial gerrymandering.

Did you forget that it was the Dems who were against the 2020 amendment to ban gerrymandering right here in VA? Despite their push, it passed in a landslide. Interestingly, Arlington was the only jurisdiction across the stater that had a majority vote against it. So spare us all the righteous indignation.
