With Love, Meghan on Netflix

I enjoy insight into who she is and the life she has cultivated. You can tell she's a good mom and she actually likes cooking and homemaking.

Her relationships with "friends" seem stilted and fake. Plus she's boring!

Maybe the criticism is because we expected "more" from her? I don't see any difference between her and Martha, Gwenyth, Ina, etc.

I don't see any "bullying" on here. It's not like people are going after her kids or telling her to off herself. There's an absolute line, but I don't see anyone crossing it.

Plus, even if people are hate watching, a view is a view.

I really have no opinion about MM one or the other. I think the difference here, is, as someone said about Martha, she really has talent and skills. Sure she had a lot of wealth and privilege, but she left Wall Street to start her own catering company in her town and it did really well. She’s actually done the grassroots of making a lot of good food and creating great spaces for entertaining and she is a talented and hard working gardener so she has the credibility to be selling books, magazines, shows, and products in that area. Hell she was even able to make interesting recipes and make a garden thrive in prison. You really don’t get more authentic than that. She just took those skills and talents and taught people to do it at mass scale. And I love how she never tries to be something she is not. She never has tried to be warm or inviting or act like she’s your best friend. She is there because she’s really talented and she wants to help you if you want to take her advice.

Gwyneth is a little different and I’ve never found her authentic, but I will give her props for not trying to be anybody that she’s not. She’s wealthy and privileged and goop is very much targeted to wealthy and privileged women. That’s fine. GOOP is less about Gwyneth’s talents and more she uses her name and her celebrity and her aspirational qualities and she puts people in touch with products, people, etc they might not have access to.

Whereas a Drew Barrymore or Kelly Clarkson have had success in the talkshow space for different reasons - I do think people find them relatable, they’ve been honest about their weight struggles, their divorces, parenting struggles, we’ve seen them a ton without make up and glammed up. People just relate to them.

I’m not sure what MM’s sweet spot will be or even if she has one. Seems like she’s probably going more for a Gwyneth vibe vs trying to be relatable and I dont think she has a unique skill set like Martha. She clearly is aspirational, very pretty, and there’s people who want to be like her or do what she recommends. So that might be enough for this show.

It’s weird though, because if she doesn’t have the cooking chops, and she’s not super relatable when she talks to friends like Mindy, I don’t see how it will be successful, but who knows.

I was rooting for Meghan and expecting the worst from the Baldwins, so I was surprised that I had the opposite reaction:

I liked the first 10 min of Meghan’s show, where there was good music playing and the scenery with the bees was lovely. I thought if she stuck to that format, it could be a very relaxing type of show to fold laundry etc. but once she got into the kitchen, it was pretty cringey. Two friends praising each other earnestly isn’t interesting or engaging. She needs a gay assistant or someone more fun/lively to break it the vibe so she doesn’t take herself too seriously. I don’t think I’ll watch another episode.

I thought I would hate the Baldwins/Hilaria, but was actually really fascinated by their life in NYC with 7 kids. They put it all out there, the messiness and chaos, and Alec is just funny with his quips (though he looks utterly exhausted).

Also, the naturalness of Hilaria’s hair/makeup/clothing compared to how made up and stiff Meghan looked was quite jarring.

I will continue to watch the Baldwin show, but I feel bad that I find Meghan’s show unwatchable.

Alec Baldwin is much more likable than Meghan. I think he is a smart and good person who has had some struggles in life which have humbled him and he has grown from.

I wouldn’t want to watch Hilaria or Meghan, but of the two, I prefer Hilaria because even with her grift, she actually seems less full of sh*t than Meghan.

He literally called his own child a pig lol

And yet, he is still more likable than Meghan. Alec is flawed and he is vulnerable about that. He is remorseful about his relationship with his daughter. And more impotently, he doesn’t pretend that his life is rainbow and butterflies and that the world had so much to learn from him - so here, enjoy this gift of a “reality” show he’s giving you. It’s quite the opposite - the world is intrigued by his chaotic life, so he got a contract and since he obviously wants the money, he is monetizing it.

He doesn’t pretend that his life is rainbow and butterflies because he’s literally murdered someone. Meghan has done nothing of the sort.

Do you hear yourself? Alex Baldwin is giving us the “gift” of a reality show? Babes he kept knocking up his fraud of a wife and now has to pay tuition for 30 kids. That’s why we are getting a reality show.

DP. He accidentally killed someone. That is not murder but you know that. Sorry people find him more entertaining than Duchess Sussex puttering around someone else's home using other people's ideas.

It doesn’t have to do with the fact that he accidentally killed someone. It has to do with the fact that he realizes how ridiculous it is that he is sixty something and raising seven kids under ten, and he is willing to make a mockery of that on television (even if it’s just because he needs the money.) unlike meghan, he is not there saying it’s not to insane, and here are tips to do the same thing in your life. Moreover, Alec is the interesting half of his marriage. Nobody is interested in Hilaria alone, just like nobody is interested in Meghan alone. She is only relevant because she is married to a famous prince, but she is delusional enough to think it’s her that the world cares about.

Pp again- and Kate is more likable than Meghan precisely because she wouldn’t nauseatingly correct someone on air for calling her Kate Middleton, and make some ornery speech about how she needs to be called “Catherine of Kent” because it’s about sharing a family name with her *kids* Meghan is self righteous, full of crap, and a narcissist. She’s annoying to watch. Kate realizes she’s a cog in the wheel of a well oiled machine and for all of her privilege, she doesn’t whine publicly about the system that’s given her this life.

You like her because she doesn’t complain. That says a lot about you.

I like Kate because she seems like a nice person. I would be fine if she chose to push back on the ridiculousness of the royal family.

I find all celebrities who complain about fame annoying. Meghan complains about the attention in one breath and in the next, begs for it.

We have no idea if Kate is a nice person. She has a very disciplined and curated image. I do like that she doesn’t beg for attention and doesn’t seem like a hypocrite. She does her job and lives her life as privately as she can. Meghan claims she wants privacy, but can’t help herself talking about how much she wants privacy. She is her own worst enemy.

I’ve always stayed clear of these H&M threads, now I know why.

I don't know why you think we should uplift someone who ridicules their friends and family on TV.

Never heard her ridicule her family. She called them out for bad behavior, like telling her to get on with it while she was suicidal and pregnant.

I really don’t care that she said curtsying is like going to Medieval Times. Do you?

It was a pretty rude thing to say about meeting your future 90 something year old grandmother-in-law. And Harry looked very uncomfortable bc it WAS uncomfortable. And the way sue addressed Mindy isn't how I would speak to my friend, in public or private. But that's fine if you act like that, just expect it to raise eyebrows.

It was not uncomfortable at all. She said the Queen was lovely but that curtsying was weird to her. If that makes you uncomfortable you need to toughen up and get a thicker skin.

I would absolutely be fine joking around with a friend. I’m sorry that you don’t seem to get along with other women so you don’t get female friendships as like an overarching concept. Maybe you should take a cue from Hillaria and go to a yoga class to make some friends there?

I don't need a thicker skin- it was uncomfortable watching Harry squirm and hearing her giggle and pretend to bow in her chair. I find her off-putting as do many people. If you don't, then great, you can tune in and watch her assemble a fruit platter. Enjoy.

Haha it is pretty funny that she is on the cover of People magazine promoting her show and then in the next breath discussing how they just want their privacy. I don't understand, she and Harry could easily leverage their connections to get jobs out of the public eye and decline to do interviews. Nothing they say makes sense.

Meghan and Harry never said they wanted privacy. I think they want a break from the more aggro followers who demand weekly pics of their kids and feel entitled to their personal lives. But they never said they didn’t like being in the public eye.

It’s clear that she enjoys being famous.

See, I don’t think the media coverage of her was racist. I think Kate faced very similar scrutiny for a long time. As did Diana. I think Meghan was delusional about what marrying into the royal family would entail on multiple fronts, including brutal media coverage.

Some of the British coverage was definitely racist, PP.

I’m curious what jobs people think these two could get out of the public eye. What skills do they have?

Not liking MM and her inauthenticity which has been a consistent and objective theme throughout any evaluation of her does not someone mean one is not a “girls girl” or dislikes women writ large. That tired and reductive trope may make you feel like you got a real zinger in and closed the case but it makes you sound like you belong on tik tok. Wonder off over there please.

I like how you reduce her complaints of extreme racist abuse that she received from the media and the family to "she complains about the attention."

Never happened.

Sadly, she definitely decanted pretzel bites from plastic into other, cuter plastic. That happened. And I’m complaining about it!

I’m curious what jobs people think these two could get out of the public eye. What skills do they have?

People already mentioned it, but I think she dresses nicely. She could have partnered with Nordstrom or Bloomingdale's for a line of linen shirts and dresses, expanded into jewelry. Something like affordable-ish luxury for MC/UMC. Harry has absolutely no skills or use.

No snark, but how can you tell that about anyone, really? What is a good mom?

What, don’t you talk about “sacred time” and being “tight-knit” re your own small nuclear family? You aren’t a good mom. Because that’s the evidence, that’s the tell. Plus balloon arches.

I agree with you on Meghan. Her collaboration for that British fashion charity was nice.

Disagree Harry has no use. He served in combat.

Anonymous wrote:Fear of falling way behind in this pop culture zeitgeist, I watched Meghan’s show and Alec Baldwin show yesterday, just the first episode of each.

Also never happened.
