They are not star crossed lovers. They are meant to be. They rekindled something that should have stayed buried. It ended in burning flames. Regardless of the sarahs and hannahs it was going to end messily one way or another. The chairman wrote her tortured poems, healed (i hope) and the story isn’t hers anymore.

She has called Matty her best friend and twin repeatedly in multiple albums. I am pretty sure she cheated on Joe or rather there was an agreement there, and she has been secretly seeing Matty for a long time.
Their break up last June wasn’t because they didn’t love each other enough, actually probably the opposite. I am guessing he loves her deeply and walked away to save her career and sanity. He was a complete mess last fall at his concerts. It’s hard to get over a breakup caused by circumstances and not by lack of love, esp when you have been in love with your “best friend” for a decade. Very, very hard. I don’t believe she is over him yet, and one example is the Fortnight video, which is a love letter to Matty.

My money is on them reconnecting at some point in the future. She released the album as quickly as humanly possible, before it’s too late and he makes an irreversible move (gets a gf pregnant or something). She still wants him.

I think she is hurt that he gave up on them after so many years of playing cat & mouse, and he’s hurt that she never tried to address and rein in her fans and chose fame over him multiple times in the past decade, incl last spring. Which is probably why he wrote “Sorry?” on a large board at the start of one of his concerts last summer, shortly after their breakup.

But now Taylor has finally had the guts to tell the world how important Matty has been to her life and music, and tell us boldly and in details (Guilty As Sin exists ☺️) and the fans who like to analyze lyrics are linking all sorts of songs and situations to him from 2014 onwards.

There was a video of Matty last year at a concert listening intently to her singing, with the look of true love in his eyes. I distinctly remember because some people around him (Gigi Hadid maybe?) were dancing raucously and whooping it up, but he was quite still and focused on her. I almost thought he would tell them to “Shut up! She’s singing!”

Yes, someone posted a social media (TikTok I think?) link to that concert earlier on this thread. He was so smitten. Taylor too has been fan girling him at his band’s concerts since forever. Giggling, pointing at him, acting like a woman in love.

More like for a decade+. Songs like Illicit Affairs, Maroon and End Game are pretty specific and allude to what really went on between them. She was hooking up with Matty secretly whenever their schedules aligned.

Joe and Travis are her move-on drugs with temporary effects. She needed distractions while she licks her wounds from being spurned by Matty, but he is the one she loves. He is her muse, the one who inspired every album since 1989. In her words: “All those nights you kept me going, swirled you into all of my poems.”
