Businesses CAN afford their labor. Now. Many of you want to pull the rug out from under them. You also realize that many of those making minimum wage ALSO benefit from tips. And, many of these people do not want the increase because their tips will be impacted. |
No they can't if the rest of us are subsidizing the wages with our taxes. |
You’re not subsidizing the wages, you’re subsidizing the workers lifestyle. There’s a huge difference. |
Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize needing food and shelter were lifestyle choices. I mean, who doesn't love the luxury of food stamps and section 8 housing. |
I used to work for tips. Tips are a total scam, and a way of employers effectively charging higher prices while paying their employees less. Instead of them deciding what their employees are worth, the customer decides, and most customers end up underpaying, but the employer doesn't get the blame. This is why low wage workers need the tips and high wage workers don't. |
Tipping also benefits attractive white people and hurts minorities and less attractive people. Tipping is a relic of slavery and Jim Crow, and it needs to go. |
+1 |
We tip good service. Not looks. And, generally, we tip very, very well. Of course, except for haircuts, have not tipped anyone in a year. Amazing that you think only white people can be attractive, though. |
I didn't say that (but I knew some predictible moron would claim that I did) I said it specifically benefits attractive white people, and has been shown to hurt everyone else. You can say you do whatever you want, but the research has shown that implicit bias absolutely has an effect on whose service is considered good and thus who receives better tips.

You can afford food and shelter on minimum wage just fine if you don’t have cable, cell phones, car payments etc. Now someone will post that those are necessities in 5...4...3...2 |
| 15k a year does not pay for food, rent, and health care. No way in hell. Add in public transportation, childcare, and utilities and you are SOL but working 40 hours a week. Absurdly low: and explains the exponential growth in cost or government services we’ve seen since the 50’s. People cannot get by on their own labor, and it’s time to fix that. |
You're living in a fantasy world. Please show us all how you would live on $15k per year. Don't have any medical emergencies! |
So now you’ve added health care and child care.... Minimum wage is not and was never designed to support a family. |
No health care? really? you really think people should be without health care? And if you don't let people have families, prepare for the revolution. |
You can have families, but again, minimum wage is for minimum skills and not designed to be a permanent wage to raise a family on. If you can’t better yourself, that’s on you, not me. |
