School Boundaries and "One Fairfax"

Can't wait to see how this plays out.

Oh my god I’m late to the game. I just heard about this one fairfax thing and am terrified. This can’t be real!

Lord Fairfax owned slaves. Columbus is controversial for his treatment of indigenous people. We could spend the next decade renaming all of the metro dc area.

Ecstatic that the mean-spirited Voices of Fairfax group got the slap down they deserved. Let’s see what stupid video they can make about the 12-0 sweep of the School Board tonight by the Democrats.

If they weren't so committed to saying things like "boundary policy is 30 years old and hasn't been revised" when it's already on its seventh version (they are working on 8)

If brabrand could say "one fairfax" to parents when supposedly clearing things up, they would be better off.

I think the crux of their comments was that they hadn’t taken a hard look in a long time at whether the considerations when making boundary adjustments in current Section IX of Policy 8130.7 are still fit-for-purpose. There are 14 considerations set forth, including “the socioeconomic characteristics of school populations,” but recent boundary changes have highlighted some factors and completely ignored others, and some factors are in conflict with others. It seems like an appropriate thing to re-examine.

As for Brabrand, his Back-to-School message from late August emphasized FCPS’s commitment to equity. Apparently he can’t win with you people: either he mentions equity and “One Fairfax” too often or not enough.

The primary focus for school zoni g should be distance/shortest possible commute or bus rides, and capacity.

Period.

Amen to this.

Thank the lord we switched to private this year-public options going off the rails...

There was a lawsuit claiming the policy was not followed when Stuart was renamed. That lawsuit was tossed.

I don't know anything about the lawsuit, but the policy was not followed. And, School Board members planned it privately. Emails were released that proved that. Is it illegal? I don't know, but it is certainly against FCPS policy.

Just because conservatives don’t always get what they want does not mean there was a conspiracy or an impropriety.

If there were violations of open meetings laws, the School Board’s action could have been overturned, but it was not. And if these emails were really private or secret, you wouldn’t know about them or be discussing them here.

Whether it’s the renaming of a school or the adjustment of boundaries, we have an elected School Board charged with making decisions that should be in the best interests of students as a whole. Not what a straw poll says or what a bunch of old people in Great Falls prefer.

“Old people in Great Falls” - as if we didn’t know already, you just outed yourself as knowing nothing about the area. Ignoramus.

Boundary changes are hard because people have made long term financial decisions (like purchasing a home) based on school boundaries. It's not so simple to just change these. I'm in a neighborhood that I'm pretty sure would stay as it's currently structured, simply because of proximity to the schools we're assigned to, but I really feel for people who might face changes. There are very few situations where you'd be getting a better deal with boundary changes. You're talking about moving people who have chosen to pay more for a house to be in a better school zone to a worse school zone and changing their housing value drastically. Not a good solution.

I think they should work harder to improve the schools as they exist. We are at an elementary school that is only 46% white and 40% FARMs with a high ESL rate. My kids are white upper middle class and we love this school. The principal and teachers are excellent. There are challenges, of course, but the wider community supports the school as well (churches help with food over weekends and summer, coat drives, etc.). There are ways to meet a school's needs where it is instead of trying to change the student population. I also think there's an element of racism in the thought that adding "white rich kids" will improve a school.

+100 -- work harder to improve the schools as they exist!!

Also, while my kids are on their way out of FCPS I discussed this topic with my DD (MHS by the way) and she is against the social engineering behind redistricting - she is a compassionate middle class child who knows the truth....in her words "poor kids get made fun of for not wearing name brand clothes and knock off Uggs...to me this would increase bullying".

I'll tell you what...if my kids were on the border of going to either Langley or MHS I would fight tooth and nail to keep them at MHS. Langley is "richer" than MHS and my kids would stick out as they wouldn't be wearing Vinyard Vines and sporting Coach purses.

You have got to be a troll. None of my kids at Langley wear VV, nor do their friends. And carrying purses? Do you even know any teenaged girls? Hint: they don’t carry purses, Coach or otherwise. Nice try.

We are already looking into private options after tonight’s disaster.

Don’t you just love these morons who try as hard as they can to make Langley look bad? It only reflects poorly on them.

Well I'm admittedly concerned. I live in the McLean district but my kids are still several years from attending high school. We also rent, but were considering purchasing a house in the next few years. Now I'm worried about killing our flexibility. I know this Voices of Fairfax group was laughed at here, but how much is there to this whole "busing" thing?

Putting aside whatever demographics stuff there is, I'd be annoyed as hell if my kids got bused to a school 3-4 times as far away in the name of equality. That seems like a logistical nightmare as far as sports, school meetings, etc.

McLean students and parents, get used to the trailer park at your school. This SB has no plans to help you.
