Do those numbers differentiate IB/OOB from the feeders? Assuming not. Just curious... b/c that might account for the Key # seeming 'high'. |
OP - can I ask how/why you thought Stoddart/Mann would send more than Key? What is it about these 3 schools that make you believe they behave differently in their willingness to embrace Hardy? |
PP, can I try to answer?
Principle Pride came from Stoddert. That might have something to do with it. Stoddert has many embassy families, I'm taking a guess here that more than Key or Mann. I'd say they don't want to or can't afford to spend $30k a year for middle school. They also don't want to leave DC because the commute back is a pain. Seems like Stoddert has way more condos and townhouses vs more expensive SFH in it's boundary than Key or Mann. I'd say middle class families(yes, upper middle if you look at the whole country) are more willing to give a new school a try that the rich who have the money and/or pressure to move their kid to private. Mine is going to Hardy in 2 years. I can't afford private nor can the families I know. Then again, what do I know about their money. Seems like the choice is between Hardy or moving out. If any, then we would do private for high school (would be a stretch financially though) because Wilson seems scary with its metal detector. If I had to take a guess that which school sends the most, I would've also guessed Stoddert, then Mann and Key. Don't know much about HA. We live IB to Mann now, but in one of the condo buildings. Many kids here, but I see them giving Hardy a try. Private is for high school if any and let's not forget college. |
OP here.
Several reasons. I expected Stoddert to provide the most Hardy students for three reasons. First and foremost, the principal at Hardy was principal at Stoddert immediately prior. Many families know and trust her. Second, sheer numbers. Stoddert is very large. Third, economics. The Stoddert catchment is more economically diverse than the other schools. For Mann, most of these point the other direction. Mann is small and, probably, the wealthiest of the DCPS. But Mann has been very. active in the movement to get kids to continue to Hardy. The principal at Mann has the complete trust of the parents, and she's putting her support behind Hardy. This is the single biggest factor for Mann and many families (clearly) are heeding her guidance. (The comment about embassy folks is misguided in my experience. Most embassy staff have private school paid for if they want it. I know lots of embassy folks and many choose the local public elementary despite being able to costlessly attend WIS or the French School, for example.) Key is large but it has never seemed particularly engaged with Hardy. For sure, Mann appears more present and Key appears willing to wait for Stoddert and Mann to initiate the transition. I expected fewer Key students this year. I was figuring about this many Key students next year, so I wil have to revise my projections upward. I think we will see a large uptick, even from this year's numbers, next year from Mann and Stoddert. Double the numbers this year would be a reachable stretch projection. |
But why are HA's numbers so low? They're relatively close to Hardy, and a lot of out of boundary people go to HA, so that is not the issue. |
Are you also afraid to fly? Deal also has metal detectors. |
If the Hardy feeder parents hold strong and send their kids to Hardy. And, if the majority of Deal feeder parents maintain their intention of sending their kids to Wilson. Then I bet we can make those metal detectors fo away in a few years. Of course it will require DCPS to shrink the Wilson boundary and get ride of OOB feeder rights. But if upper NW parents stand together and don't allow DCPS to fragment us as they have done in the past, we CAN do this. |

You understand that metal detectors are there to protect kids, right? I have two kids at Wilson and I see no problem with the metal detectors. Entering the building may take some time but I actually prefer knowing that everyone has to go through them rather than wondering if an unstable, depressed teen is in crisis and has brought a weapon to school. Of course you could move to an affluent suburb, say, Columbine, CO where they clearly didn't have metal detectors. |

Wilson needs to shrink the boundaries more to get rid of metal detectors? Not due to overcrowding but the brown kids from Shepherd and Bancroft are now the cause of metal detectors, right? We CAN do this, we CAN make Wilson all white and get rid of the metal detectors! Any urban school without metal detectors is scary, it is a sign of the times and as most mass shootings in schools have occurred in non-urban areas they should also install them. ![]() |
Huh? You're scary, PP. You imply so many things that demonstrate what a stunted, prejudiced person you clearly are. So you think by getting rid of OOB ( we are OOB and have been since pre-K...now in 5th) and shrinking boundaries (which I have no doubt means that you want to see Bancroft and Shepard nixed) you'll make Deal, Hardy and Wilson schools that no longer require basic, modern era security measures? Because the student population will be whiter and richer? Is that what you're saying. I'd like to tell you what you CAN do... |
Thankfully the people who actually send their kids to these schools do not think the way you do. |
Scary or truthful? If there is nothing to fear with OOB students, then why don't you attend your neighborhood school? What you say PP implied with words you demonstrated with your feet. No difference. |
I'm confused. Are there metal detectors at Hardy now? If so, why would increased IB enrollment make them go away? |
