It’s sorority video season

And before you yip about “well they put it out there,” OK but Linda, Ted? It’s not for you. It’s not for anyone here on DCUM. Not everything is for you.

DCUM: I can believe that kids today waste their time on social media, posting things, trying to get likes.

Also DCUM: you judge young people posting things. Shame on you! Disgusting!

Greek affiliation lowers the GPA of students involved and they tend to take easier classes and drop classes more often while rushing.

This thread is largely about hyper-exclusive "top tier" Greek houses at selective flagship universities, which are full of well-bred and ambitious UMC and wealthy girls and boys. When you purposely include non-selective "bottom tier" Greek houses and Greek life at every podunk state college full of remedial nitwits, of course all the academic stats sink.

I'm sure "brains" are the only thing your son cares about in a girl. Hotness is not at all important to him. Or, so he assures you.

Actually hotness is nowhere near the top of his list. We raised him better than that. He focuses on character and brains. He is a brainiac who does not want to be with a shallow dummy! And this is clear from his dating history thus far, thankfully. Future surgeon likely to marry similar.

Sororities typically have a higher average GPA than the campus average. Nice try though.

They don’t. You need at least a 2.5 or 2.75 to be admitted into a sorority. Plus the sorority members are not getting an engineering degree, chemical engineering or any of the hard sciences. They major in psychology or communications or business.

That’s not to say there are some schools that have sororities where the students have high GPAs and difficult majors. It’s just not Arizona.

They do have higher GPAs than the campus average. This is easy data to find. Just google a school’s name and Greek GPAs. I looked at this before my daughter rushed.

Also, her chapter requires a 3.0 just to rush. Another chapter requires a 3.3.

Wow, such a high bar.

You’re garbage.

Sorry but if these social organizations exist to sit in judgment of who is desirable to be admitted and who is not, they had best be able to handle some judgement in return. Don't dish it out if you can't take it.

Please. The anti-sorority people on this thread have been FAR harsher than those defending the organizations. I’ve been told to eat a bag of male anatomy, simply for suggesting we shouldn’t put people’s daughters down.

As for sitting in judgment… I was in a sorority. We pretty much had an open door. If you liked us, you were in. You could have found a similar sorority at your school if you bothered to open your eyes to the possibility. You miss out on a lot when you let your prejudice guide your decisions.

You seem to be confusing a lot of posters. There are some who basically here to insult everyone posting.

So why are schools like UConn, UMass, NYU, BU, BC, every Ivy, Pitt, Penn State, UMD et al more popular than ever. Are all the southerners heading North?

Every large college is receiving more apps than ever because the borders are wide open, anyone in the world can apply, and small and mid-sized colleges are all dying.

Bottom line is y'all really can't cope with the fact that the South is booming and smart northern / mid-Atlantic / west coast teens are seeking out the traditional Southern conservative ethos. Because TikTok and other social media is making these colleges look amazing compared to the cold, bad weather, parkas, and far left miserable ethos they see on the same social media at New England and other northern universities.

That’s comment’s been deleted, but that was a pro-sorority (or weird MAGA type who’s all in this thread) poster who wrote that one.

Your jealously-fueled corny Greek life stereotypes are 30 or 40 years out of date. When it comes to state flagships' top tier houses, they're full of overachievers who play hard and work harder these days.

Big colleges are doing better because of US news rankings first and tik tok videos a distant second. As the kids say, it’s not that deep.

Have you been to Bernie Sanders’ Vermont. Women’s legs are hairier than men’s.

There are a lot of outing clubs at UVM, if you know what I mean.

It's not Alabama. It's Vermont. You can actually talk about gay and lesbian students instead of shoving them into the closet. It's ok.

Vermont is gorgeous. Get outdoors in Vermont and you won't be sorry regardless sexual orientation.

Do you think they don’t have openly gay students in the south? They do. And they are comfortable and happy there.

Your biased assumptions are just imagined.

Hahahahahahahahahaha, GOOD ONE!

I’m responding directly to the post above mine who suggested that because of the sorority and school, there would be no “remedial nitwits.” Talk about corny stereotypes.

There are dummies everywhere.

Just for sex and that’s okay!

In your son's dreams. For the most part, these girls don't sleep with anyone not affiliated with a peer tier Greek house, i.e. other affluent well-bred ambitious boys from good backgrounds. And they date to marry.

This stereotype these gals are all dumb, trashy, promiscuous, drunks looking for a Mrs Degree... is laughably absurd. They more than likely have an outgoing personality, a 3.9 GPA, are studying for the LSAT or MCAT, and want to marry soon after college and build a life together with a nice boy. Heaven forbid!!!!!

Arguing against the stereotyping re: Southern schools by making broad generalizations/stereotyping non-Southern schools is, oh so, ironic.

I love how your “bottom line” is devoid of any rational thought and just pulled from your ass.

The bottom line is that southerners make up much larger %ages at the New England universities you mention than vice versa. Go look at where kids are from for every Ivy, NYU, Williams, BU…all these schools. They are all at least 10% and most are 15%+.

The only schools in the south equivalent are the top private schools like Emory, Vandy and Duke which we all agree feel more like the top privates above than SEC schools.

Your issue is you focus on %age increases without understanding the nominal numbers aren’t impressive at all…and when kids are interviewed as to why as an example a kid is at Ga Tech…his answer was because I was rejected at Tufts.

I know you think you are helping but yapping about girls finding “well bred” boys from “good” backgrounds makes it sound even worse.
