Oscars 2025

Watched Anora because it won so many awards and thought it was all-around mediocre. I especially don't get the best actress award - Madison wasn't bad, it just seemed like anybody could have played that character. The Ani character was fairly one-note (until the end scene in the car), not exactly a meaty role.

Is this it for Demi and a chance at an Oscar?

I think Demi succeeded at getting back on the radar and will hopefully get other big roles now that she’s demonstrated she still has a fan base and can act.

There’s no reason to trot out Nicole Kidman or British actresses when Demi is here.

Demi can't hold a candle to British actresses like Kate Winslet, Emma Thomson, Judi Dench, etc. or to Nicole Kidman. I like her, but she's not a great actress. She happened to get a really good role, but she might not get another.

Emma and Judi are old…and look old. They can play old ladies.

Nicole has destroyed her face and is in too many projects.

I say give Demi another role. She’s still vibrant and a decent actress. Surely she will find another movie?

I am sick of Nicole Kidman and her face is weird. Demi could do a lot of the roles that Nic is getting. Demi is great as sort of an intense power broker type woman — cast her as a political ladder climber, a cut throat law firm partner, etc. I think she’s much better than Nic on those sorts of roles. She’s got that cut through you stare and can deliver rapid fire dialogue. She also can deliver a comic line decently well. I don’t think she has the largest range in the world but she is great with certain types of roles.

Fwiw, just like Demy Moore's plastic surgery worked well for The Substance, Nicole Kidman's plastic surgery worked well for Babygirl. She was a control freak who got botox on screen.

DCUM is very conservative. Not politically, but socially a ton of hall monitor types who are quick to clutch their pearls.

NP and I really don’t care about nudity in movies. But the Oscars are constantly rewarding women for playing sex workers. It’s like they think they are so liberal but it is the opposite.

If you want to win an Oscar, make a film about (1) Hollywood itself, (2) the Holocaust, or (3) sex workers. If you can combine all three, even better.

Gee, I wonder who is voting in the Academy?

Even Demi Moore was shocked she lost to this mediocre film. It’s this decade’s Crash.

+1

It was the same with Lily Gladstone losing to Emma Stone last year. One performance was really subdued and nuanced and restrained but still showed the emotional weight of what was going on. The other she either acted like a toddler or was having sex. It was a no brainer to me but not Hollywood.

A similar thing happened when Glenn Close was expected to win for The Wife, which was a masterclass of subtlety and power, and then they gave the award to Olivia Colman for The Favourite, which was nonstop squawking and crying.

I loved The Favourite

And it's ok if you don't like Yorgos Lanthimos but the Academy does

They don't like him enough to give him his own Oscar!

MTE.

I also watched Emilia Perez and absolutely hated it.

The Substance was a perfect role for Demi, but she just isn’t a great actress.

I think a lot of people mistake "going all out" with quality acting. MM screaming her head off for two hours isn't "raw", it's just loud.

Yes! Not all acting is screaming and crying.

I think other actors like this stuff and vote for it. I've noticed this in the past. Maybe it's physically hard to do or something else only actors would know? Like Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. It's all-out all the time.

I also think stories about prostitutes get more notice in Hollywood than horror does. The fact that The Substance got so many nominations was surprising because horror rarely does well.

When the Academy voters are largely composed of crusty old men, they are going to vote for the young woman they want to f#ck. Demi Moore literally represents the first wives they already traded in for newer models!

True. Mikey Madison is Sue of The Substance!

Anonymous wrote:All the awards for Anora were kind of gross. An industry awarding a former heroin addict for showcasing a young actress willing to do softcore porn scenes to raise her profile. Because otherwise you really don’t get an award for being the 10000th actress to do a Brooklyn accent.

Who is the former heroin addict?

The director, Sean Baker. He recovered from his heroin addiction and then proceeded to make film after film about sex workers. In Anora, he cast Mikey Madison, then in her early 20s, to strip and perform graphic sex scenes and gyrations nude without an intimacy coordinator. For this they are both rewarded by the entertainment industry.

Maybe it's his redemption but what a message that sends to young actresses. Meanwhile better performances were overlooked.

Madison was offered and declined an intimacy coordinator.

Yes, it’s true that the director let Madison decide whether she wanted an intimacy coordinator or not. But I also think that as a 25 year old trying to turn in the “raw” performance her director clearly wanted, was not really in a position to say she wanted one even if she really did. That’s a power imbalance there.

I mean, do you have any proof of this? If you don’t have any inside information then it’s just your opinion.

You can search for yourself about the interviews the director and Madison have given about the film. They are proud about the “rawness” of the film because it didn’t have an intimacy coordinator. And yes, I think it’s a power imbalance.

There’s also the fact that the director makes all his movies about sex workers and follows loads of OF women on his instagram. He seems like a bit of a red flag.

He finalized the finalized the screenplay for Mikey after watching scream and once upon a time in Hollywood and referred to her as a "sexy teenager." There was a huge power imbalance imo as well. There should have been an IC not only for Mikey sake but other's as well.

You prudes are basically the only ones saying this.

You don’t read Reddit, obviously.

The Oscars do weird stuff in the technical awards. It's rare that they get categories like Cinematography and Editing right.

That's my issue with it. She didn't carry the movie nor did she work with the movie. Instead she became a background character by the end of the end film. Even it winning screenplay is very odd to me. His wins will age badly

I liked Igor. The only actor/character with any subtlety in an overly loud, gimmicky film.
I think it would have been a better movie if they'd cut the "thugs in the house with Ani" and "thugs and Ani drive around looking for Vanya" parts down by forty minutes, and spent that time developing Anora's character and backstory, but maybe that's me choosing to make the film a drama, instead of a wacky mix of glamorous rom com, hapless mobster comedy, gritty drama, and Uncut Gems type frenzy. I did like the depth and vulnerability of the last two scenes, but it was too little, too late for me to start caring about a character that was never developed.

+1
DP. Totally agree. The middle parts with the screaming Ani demanding to be untied for what seemed like ages - and “f*ck” being the basis for any and all dialogue - was the biggest waste of time. My eyes were glazing over. I can’t believe this won Best Director, as the pacing and decision to make this one of the longest parts of the movie was just awful.

I would like to see Demi play a non-glamorous role. Cut the hair, play someone’s mom (or grandma). That would be refreshing.

I mean, Mikey Madison was fine, but in no way was this an award winning film in any way. The middle part with them driving around looking for Ivan was so incredibly dull.

Really disappointed because when it won, I was so excited to see it. What a complete letdown.

Most of the Best Picture nominees this year were awful.

I haven’t seen any of them except Emilia Perez and Anora, but who on earth thought these two were Oscar winners? What happened to the years of wonderful, magnificent films? Makes me so sad to see this trash that is being made now.

I wish I knew how to insert a dame Maggie smith meme here.

If you look back over the history of Best Picture winners, there are many movies that won that, in retrospect, should not have won. Unfortunately, this year just continued that trend.
