Is this it for Demi and a chance at an Oscar?

I think Demi succeeded at getting back on the radar and will hopefully get other big roles now that she’s demonstrated she still has a fan base and can act.

There’s no reason to trot out Nicole Kidman or British actresses when Demi is here.

Demi can't hold a candle to British actresses like Kate Winslet, Emma Thomson, Judi Dench, etc. or to Nicole Kidman. I like her, but she's not a great actress. She happened to get a really good role, but she might not get another.

Emma and Judi are old…and look old. They can play old ladies.

Nicole has destroyed her face and is in too many projects.

I say give Demi another role. She’s still vibrant and a decent actress. Surely she will find another movie?

I would like to see Demi play a non-glamorous role. Cut the hair, play someone’s mom (or grandma). That would be refreshing.

I mean, Mikey Madison was fine, but in no way was this an award winning film in any way. The middle part with them driving around looking for Ivan was so incredibly dull.

Really disappointed because when it won, I was so excited to see it. What a complete letdown.

Most of the Best Picture nominees this year were awful.

I haven’t seen any of them except Emilia Perez and Anora, but who on earth thought these two were Oscar winners? What happened to the years of wonderful, magnificent films? Makes me so sad to see this trash that is being made now.

If you look back over the history of Best Picture winners, there are many movies that won that, in retrospect, should not have won. Unfortunately, this year just continued that trend.

When you have men stuck in a teen mind this is what you get usually. Not all of them were terrible but they didn't get nominated. They could have given the best movie to an animated film. Have they ever?

No. Only 3 have ever been nominated for Best Picture:

Beauty and the Beast (lost to The Silence of the Lambs)
Up (lost to The Hurt Locker)
Toy Story 3 (lost to The King's Speech)

Who is the former heroin addict?

The director, Sean Baker. He recovered from his heroin addiction and then proceeded to make film after film about sex workers. In Anora, he cast Mikey Madison, then in her early 20s, to strip and perform graphic sex scenes and gyrations nude without an intimacy coordinator. For this they are both rewarded by the entertainment industry.

Maybe it's his redemption but what a message that sends to young actresses. Meanwhile better performances were overlooked.

Madison was offered and declined an intimacy coordinator.

Yes, it’s true that the director let Madison decide whether she wanted an intimacy coordinator or not. But I also think that as a 25 year old trying to turn in the “raw” performance her director clearly wanted, was not really in a position to say she wanted one even if she really did. That’s a power imbalance there.

I mean, do you have any proof of this? If you don’t have any inside information then it’s just your opinion.

You can search for yourself about the interviews the director and Madison have given about the film. They are proud about the “rawness” of the film because it didn’t have an intimacy coordinator. And yes, I think it’s a power imbalance.

There’s also the fact that the director makes all his movies about sex workers and follows loads of OF women on his instagram. He seems like a bit of a red flag.

He finalized the finalized the screenplay for Mikey after watching scream and once upon a time in Hollywood and referred to her as a "sexy teenager." There was a huge power imbalance imo as well. There should have been an IC not only for Mikey sake but other's as well.

Demi could do a lot of the roles that Nic is getting. Demi is great as sort of an intense power broker type woman — cast her as a political ladder climber, a cut throat law firm partner, etc. I think she’s much better than Nic on those sorts of roles. She’s got that cut through you stare and can deliver rapid fire dialogue. She also can deliver a comic line decently well. I don’t think she has the largest range in the world but she is great with certain types of roles.

I get that you hate Kidman but you're wrong if you think Demi could just sub in for NK. Kidman, in an effort to work with female directors and bring women's stories to light, has produced many of her recent projects. Some projects only get green lit because NK is part of them. Reese Witherspoon is another working to bring projects where women are cast as more than just the wife of mother. These women should be applauded for at least that much.

The voters are past nominees and others who are invited. Most voters don’t bother to see the films— they just vote based on vibes, friendships, etc. Some voters this year said stuff like they weren’t going to vote for Fiennes because he’s already won an award (he hasn’t). Really intelligentsia here.

That’s my post and I actually t really like NK as a person. I just always think she seems a little weird/off on her acting. like she brings an eyes wide shut energy to all her dramatic roles. I actually like her better when she uses her real accent, or in comedies, but o know that’s not a popular take.
I appreciate her and Reese producing female-centric movies but I also have to say I don’t like most of them. They mostly have a sort of book club vibe that is sort of like high class soap opera type stuff. Like that recent Kidman vehicle about the rich lady with the beach house (who spoiler alert was previously a sex worker, so we come back to how much Hollywood likes sex workers). Nic is probably a better actor than Demi, but I think there’s room for both of them and they could fill a lot of the same roles. I feel like I have to rewatch indecent proposal or something to assess Demi’s acting. (Love Redford and woody so it’s probably worth a rewatch!)

Anyway, I think we’re all in agreement that Hollywood needs more roles for women over 60, and that there’s probably room for more than the 3 of them that they keep using.

There are many older successful actresses. There is even June Squibb for very elderly people and she is amazing! The issue is you can only play characters you are credible as physically, and for Demi Moore and Nicole Kidman, that rules out the average older woman due to all the surgery they got..So what's left are actresses, rich women...

The book club to screen projects are one step closer to production. You have material with a story you like with a strong female lead, someone like NK, RW, Jen Aniston or Kerry Washington buys the option, you get a screenwriter, etc. And off you go.
