I hadn't heard of Anora before last night. I watched it today. I was expecting something far more graphic based on the comments. I thought the whole thing was pretty meh and wasn't that impressed with the actress.
DCUM is very conservative. Not politically, but socially a ton of hall monitor types who are quick to clutch their pearls.
NP and I really don’t care about nudity in movies. But the Oscars are constantly rewarding women for playing sex workers. It’s like they think they are so liberal but it is the opposite.
I think a lot of people mistake "going all out" with quality acting. MM screaming her head off for two hours isn't "raw", it's just loud.
That's my issue with it. She didn't carry the movie nor did she work with the movie. Instead she became a background character by the end of the end film. Even it winning screenplay is very odd to me. His wins will age badly
I liked Igor. The only actor/character with any subtlety in an overly loud, gimmicky film. I think it would have been a better movie if they'd cut the "thugs in the house with Ani" and "thugs and Ani drive around looking for Vanya" parts down by forty minutes, and spent that time developing Anora's character and backstory, but maybe that's me choosing to make the film a drama, instead of a wacky mix of glamorous rom com, hapless mobster comedy, gritty drama, and Uncut Gems type frenzy. I did like the depth and vulnerability of the last two scenes, but it was too little, too late for me to start caring about a character that was never developed.
+1 DP. Totally agree. The middle parts with the screaming Ani demanding to be untied for what seemed like ages - and “f*ck” being the basis for any and all dialogue - was the biggest waste of time. My eyes were glazing over. I can’t believe this won Best Director, as the pacing and decision to make this one of the longest parts of the movie was just awful.
