So I'm totally stealing someone else's idea... I've been a huge DG fan from the beginning, and I've had a hard time responding to the current "watching Outlander" thread without posting spoilers.
Mostly I'm dying to discuss how the series is progressing versus what happens in the books. I'll start small, just in case people who can't contain their curiosity click on this without knowing what a "spoiler" is. 1.) What's up with Geillis Duncan?? Some of the previews I've seen make it seem like Claire is getting back to the standing stones in the next episode. Are they cutting out that part of the story line do you think? 2.) I don't remember Dougal being THAT in to Claire. Am I mis-remembering? 3.) For some reason I had the impression that Jamie's mother's pearls were more of a choker, not a long strand of beads. Again, am I mis-remembering? 4.) I also don't remember ANY part of the story being from Frank's perspective (aside from letters). If that's actually going to happen, I'm actually happy about it. Anyone else? |
I don't know for sure (I've been avoiding spoiler discussions on line) but since you asked my opinion : I don't think Claire is getting back to the stones in the next episode. What I think is happening in the next episode, based on the previews (and on having read the book): the Scots continue on their camping trip and are attacked by a rival clan--I think that's the sword fighting we see in the previews. Claire and Jamie have more bonding time and more sex, also suggested in the previews. Also, in the previews there is a quick shot of an arrow landing near Jamie and Claire who are sitting together on a hill. That's got to be when Jamie's friend, the beggar who had his tongue cut out, meets up with them in the woods. I think it is after this in the book when Claire learns about Jamie trying to prove his innocence by finding the witness named Horrocks (or whatever). Then Jamie and the band of merry Scots leave Claire alone in the woods, after Jamie threatens to beat her if she doesn't stay put. Jamie and Scots ride off, Claire takes off, gets caught by Brits and taken back to Jack Randall, who attempts to rape her. I think that is what is being shown in the previews when there is a knife cutting her laces. I suspect the episode is going to leave us there, perhaps with Jamie peering in the window. It would be a great cliff-hanger. At any rate, that's how I would do it if I were writing this show. And also, I would definitely keep the scene where Rupert teaches Claire how to use the dirk.
I can't see how they can cut the Geillis story out, because the witch trial is so important. It is when Claire realizes that Geillis must also be from the future, and it is the reason why Claire tells Jamie the truth about where she comes from--after the trial, Jamie asks her straight out, "Are you a witch?" It's after that that he takes her back to the stones. I suspect this isn't coming until the spring.
Well, I don't think the book is so suggestive of this at this point. But much later on in the book, after Jamie has been taken from Lallybroch and Claire is searching for him, she meets Dougal who tells her that Jamie is in prison and is going to be hanged. Dougal's plan is to take Claire as his own wife. So I think Dougal's most recent bad behavior in in service to this plot-line.
I also had the impression that it was more of a choker. Also, he gave them to her before their wedding.
You are right, although we get more of Frank's side of the story in the third book (although still told by Claire). I really think this is something that's not well fleshed out in the book and is improved upon in the show. Claire keeps trying to get back to Frank, even after her mind-blowing love connection with Jamie. The book doesn't do a great job of explaining why this is, IMO. Jamie is so attractive and sympathetic that the reader wants her to stay with Jamie and forget about going back. I think the show is doing a better job of making Frank someone whom Claire WANTS to return to, if only because she doesn't want him to suffer. I have read in some fan discussions people complain that the show is making Frank too sympathetic, but I think that is exactly what needs to happen. This should be a wrenching choice for Claire, else why is she risking so much to get back to him? |

My question:
1) Are they going to have the "spanking" scene? |
I am the poster who suggested starting a spoiler-laden thread so thanks to OP for starting it. I agree totally about the Frank bit. I love that the show is making this truly a wrenching conflict for Claire. Much more interesting story that way. So can I now shout to you guys and the heavens about my dread regarding the forthcoming meeting between Jamie and Black Jack? Dammit, don't want to see that. I think it is the reason I never read any further in the series beyond the first book, even though I enjoyed the first book. I assume you all have read further in the series, if not all. Should I give the other books a go? |
| ^^yeah, I think my Outlander viewing ends with The Wedding. Let me know when/if it's safe to look again. |
I assume you want to avoid the rape scene(s)? I can't imagine that's happening until well into the second half of the season. |
Outlander is by far my favorite book in the series, though I really liked the second and third books. I enjoyed the fourth book much less, and started but never finished the fifth. I've reread Outlander several times, but not the 2nd or 3rd, so I could be misremembering, but I think you can give the 2nd and 3rd books a go. |
| I am pretty sure the spanking scene is going to happen -- I believe I read an interview of the actors just after they had filmed it. I think! |
Yep, let me know when it's over. BTW, is this part still in the first book? |
|
There were definitely hints in the books about Dougal's interest in Claire, but it wasn't obvious, I think, because the books are from Claire's perspective and she wasn't aware of the intensity of Dougal's interest in her until later. On the show, on the other hand, we have an outsider's perspective, and they're making more obvious to us what Claire had not realized in the books at that point in the store. She was also unaware of the depth of Jaime's interest in her for a while and I think that is also more obvious in the show.
I have also been wondering about and dreading the spanking scene. I had mixed feelings about it when I read it and don't know how they're going to pull it off. They did a great job with the Black Jack whipping scene, so I think they'll do well with the rape scene. We already got the sadistic, pain+adoration flavor of Jack's attraction to Jamie when Jack was recounting to Claire his feelings of "creating a masterpiece" together with Jamie during the whipping. It seems they did it that way on purpose to foretell what's coming at the prison and I think they will mimic the tone of that scene. I think it will be kind of like that - We won't see the whole thing, we will get snippets of it as Jamie recounts the horror of being tortured and made love to at the same time. |
Sure, we can let you know, but since it can't be happening for several more episodes, do you really need to check out of the show now? That was what I was saying above. You have time before you need to worry. Bleah, it's going to be awful. I mean, if it's not awful what would be the point? |
Which part? Not sure I understand your question, but yes, what is happening now and throughout the first season is the first book. I assume they will wrap up the entire first book and do the second book (in part or in its entirety) in the second season. I do think they could probably spread the second book over into a 3rd season--it covers a lot of ground, literally and figuratively. |
Yeah, the spanking scene is going to be hard to pull off for a modern audience. I wonder if they will write it so that Jamie is pretty much forced by the other men to punish her. Like, for example, if Dougal tells him that he'll do it himself (or even starts to do it himself) if Jamie doesn't. It was an absolutely brilliant stroke to have Jack Randall tell Claire himself about Jamie's flogging. Much better than a 3rd person account, as in the book. Tobias Menzies is fabulous, BTW. |
It will be awful if they actually stick to all the things Jamie tells Claire in the book. Just beyond gross. I hope they don't go full bore because then it will be like sitting through one of those torture porn films. |

OP again....
So since it seems like no one is going to bash us for carrying on a conversation that contains spoilers, I have other questions/ comments ( and I really encourage anyone/everyone else to post as well).
Assuming the series follows the books... 1.) The Lallybroch homecoming (and events leading up to it)... 1a.) When Claire is debating whether to go or to stay... How do you think they'll handle the "fading" so that Jamie grabs her and actually believes? 1b.) Jenny Murray... Yay or nay on how she looks? I know it was about 90 seconds of screen time, but I think she has serious potential
1c.) Anyone else want to see how Jamie is totally taken to task by his older sibling?
2.) I think they set up BJR to be Evil (with a deliberate capital E) and they set the tone for the triangle well. I don't think that the series is going to back down from the brutal scene. I had to hide behind my really comfy blanket to watch the flogging scene, but at the same time... being whipped 100 times over 100 times is just flat out brutal. It is what it is. Saying that... 2a.) I think that while the BJR & Jamie thing could get awful to watch, what about Claire in the woods with the Wolves? How fantastic would it be to see her kick some serious a$$? Maybe it won't happen, but still... I"m sure I'll figure out more questions, but in the meantime, if I'm not the only "fangirl" here, post your own questions so we can get a discussion started!
