You are right, although we get more of Frank's side of the story in the third book (although still told by Claire). I really think this is something that's not well fleshed out in the book and is improved upon in the show. Claire keeps trying to get back to Frank, even after her mind-blowing love connection with Jamie. The book doesn't do a great job of explaining why this is, IMO. Jamie is so attractive and sympathetic that the reader wants her to stay with Jamie and forget about going back. I think the show is doing a better job of making Frank someone whom Claire WANTS to return to, if only because she doesn't want him to suffer. I have read in some fan discussions people complain that the show is making Frank too sympathetic, but I think that is exactly what needs to happen. This should be a wrenching choice for Claire, else why is she risking so much to get back to him?
I am the poster who suggested starting a spoiler-laden thread so thanks to OP for starting it. I agree totally about the Frank bit. I love that the show is making this truly a wrenching conflict for Claire. Much more interesting story that way. So can I now shout to you guys and the heavens about my dread regarding the forthcoming meeting between Jamie and Black Jack? Dammit, don't want to see that. I think it is the reason I never read any further in the series beyond the first book, even though I enjoyed the first book. I assume you all have read further in the series, if not all. Should I give the other books a go?
Outlander is by far my favorite book in the series, though I really liked the second and third books. I enjoyed the fourth book much less, and started but never finished the fifth. I've reread Outlander several times, but not the 2nd or 3rd, so I could be misremembering, but I think you can give the 2nd and 3rd books a go.
