The start of book 2 made me cranky towards DH tonight. I better take a break.

I know, the beginning of book 2 made me sad. Don't tell me more; I'm only about halfway through.

I really liked the mid season finale. Well done!

I started watching the show and then started reading the first book. Is it just me, but I find the book to be disapponting compared to the series. I t may be because I just read throught he scene where he beats claire and then the it seems as if he practically rapes her later. I stopped reading at that point. I know its the times they live in but why did the writer have to go there. I will be curious to see how the show addresses that part. Anyhow, maybe the show Jamie is just so hot that the book can't top that....

"No worry lass. I've been hurt much worse, and by people much less pretty."

well, two things. First, you said it yourself: it is the times they live in. People were physically punished for transgressions, including wives and children and subjects and underlings.

Second, I don't perceive that scene as rape at all. (I assume you are talking about the part where they have a big fight about Laoghaire and whether or not Jamie and Claire have "claims" on one another.) Claire certainly doesn't view what happens as rape--in fact, she quite enjoys it, and appears to dish it out as well as take it. The next morning, he complains about his bite and scratch marks. And again, in the times they are in, Claire *is* Jamie's property. He has absolute claim to her, in every way, shape, and form. It's clear that the author is tapping into that aspect of 18th century living as part of a modern subjugation fantasy (which isn't an uncommon fantasy, by the way) , but that doesn't make it any less realistic in terms of what might have happened had Claire actually travelled back in time.

totally agree. I could not be less interested in the sex portrayed in, say, Game of Thrones. It is a total turn-off for me--not just sexually; I also turn off the TV, LOL.

I think The Wedding episode may be the best produced hour of television ever actually. It would have to be near the top of anyone's list. It'll be interesting to see if the kudos keeps pouring in for this episode or it fizzles. Other episodes, and from what I gather will be the next episode (in April) cram in too much rape and beating for my taste . . . but The Wedding will be saved on my DVR as long as technology permits.

I don't see why people keep saying that they are now going to stop watching or that there will be too much rape and beating in upcoming episodes. The show has been great so far. Maybe it will continue to be so?

Well you saw the last episode that went directly from wedding to rape, abduction, rape without any of the lovely post-wedding bliss in the book. And since this is a spoiler thread, we pretty much now know what will come in the next 15 minutes of the 18th C part of the show. And DB interviews have been gross on the subject.

I dunno. The post-wedding scenes in the book are very nice and I wouldn't have minded a bit more of that in the show. But honestly, I think it would not have made very compelling TV to have another episode focused on them talking and making love, especially since there would be no flashback scenes to break things up visually. And I also think by not lingering over Claire & Jamie's relationship at this point--focusing on Frank, and how "forced" her relationship with Jamie actually is at this point, despite their connection, and how savage life can be in the 18th c--the show is doing a better job than the book at demonstrating why Claire wants to get the hell out of 1743 and back to the future. Spending another episode on Claire intertwined with Jamie would have made it seem very strange to the uninitiated viewer when Claire tries to leave him.

Re DB interviews--I have avoided them all because, in spite of liking (some of) her books, I have always thought her to be a complete whack-job. I honestly don't care what she has to say about the show.

So I'm struggling to read book 2. J+C in France doesn't do much for me. Does it get better? How about the subsequent books?

I liked the second book, though not as much as the first. It does get better, IMO. I think the scenes in France will play well on TV--the visuals will be great.

I liked the third book. But I don't think I finished the fourth and I havent' read any of the others.
