Outlander Spoiler Thread - ONLY for those who have read the book(s) or WANT to know what's coming!:)

I also think that it'll be easier for the show to avoid the book's weaknesses. They'll be condensing and distilling and its likely to be tighter and more focused than book 2.

Ok, finished book 3. I agree that the story's getting a little crazy with all the perils and the traveling. A bit over the top, but I'm still enjoying the story so I'm going to give book 4 a chance.

I'm done with book 4. Enjoyed those first four. Book 5 is dragging a bit and not holding my interest as well. I'll probably finish it, but if it doesn't capture me before it ends, not 't sure I'll bother with the rest.

One thing I'd want to see - more Lord Grey. I find myself wishing there was a Jamie-Claire-Lord Grey threesome scene, lol! I'll have to look for it in fan fiction, I guess. Diana Gabaldon's Jamie is not going to go for that.

Has anyone read the Lord Grey books? Are they any good?

I read the Scottish Prisioner! Its quite good. These characters are so complex and without the distraction of claire it adds a lot.

I found this thread wanting to discuss the show with readers of the books, but it seems that not everyone has read all the books, snd some question going forward. I am not a reader, but picked up the books because of the long break in the show. I nanaged to finish them all. While it gets a little slow around book 5 & 6, its worth sticking it out to get all the background for books 7 & 8. I find myself following the GD facebook page just for snippets as she works on book 9...which is a long way away. I guess my point is, if you love the characters, want to follow the significance of their familial lines, the profecy, follow jamie and claire's love story & all its tests and its evolution over time...then read on.

I'm the PP you're responding to. I never finished book 5. Left it about halfway through around the time I wrote that message. But now that the show is back, and given your input, I may pick it up again.

I am surprised to find that no one has posted following the penultimate and final episodes of the series. I have them recorded on my DVR and haven't been able to bring myself to watch them, having read the books and knowing what is coming. From the articles I've read online, they did not shy away from any of it. I'm not sure when I'll watch them.

The finale was intense. I had difficulty watching it, even knowing what was going to happen. I think despite the truly horrific scenes, the actors portrayed it brilliantly.

I didn't read the books, and I was on pins and needles watching the torture and rape scenes. The acting was outstanding.

My wife wanted to discuss her impression that Jamie seemed to enjoy being raped. She got mad at me when I said- No thanks. I'd just assume forget that final episode. (Except for the fact that Jamie escaped- that's a small consolation for having to endure the torture scenes. )

But Jamie did get sexual pleasure from it. That's kind of the point. Randall tortured him to make him vulnerable and then deliberately conflated Claire and himself in Jamie's mind in order to further torture and break him. Jamie said that the sexual pleasure "made the pain go away" and the shame of that is why Jamie wanted to kill to himself. That bit of truth is what Jamie holds back on telling Claire after they rescue him and what she finally made him reveal in order to heal and want to live be again. You have to acknowledge that in order to fully appreciate what a sadist Randall was and what effort and love it took on Jamie's part to come back to life and to Claire.

I fast forwarded through last week's episode and haven't watched last night's yet. I'm not sure I really want to watch it. Perhaps I'll just catch up with them in France.

I'm the PP you quoted and I may do the same.

I thought the episode was well done. It broke up the rape into parts so you don't need to process it all at once. And it wasn't as painful for me as the book because it happened relatively quickly.

I agree that the season finale was well done. But, I also don't think you're missing out on much if you skip it.
