demoralized in MCPS

Anonymous
I wish I knew how to take my credentials and experiences as a teacher, former SDT and current administrator into something in the private sector. I can't take the BS that MCPS is throwing our way and expecting to deliver back at school to staff and families with a forced smile. I really used to think we were doing the best for kids. That went out the window when Smith arrived.

For me being a teacher is great. I only work 180 days a year not including the sick days and after 20 years I get a large chunk of my pay for the rest of my life. I don't know what you people are complaining about. This si the best gig ever.

Got in in the good ol days when college was cheap, jobs were secure, kids were not violent and respectful and the union had a job to do for teachers. Now a days it is the opposite. Quit bragging and help out a grunt who is bullied find the routes that you were able to enjoy.

Everything they wrote was completely accurate and it's not like most people have benefits that can hold a candle to this. Teachers need to stop complaining and realize they're so much better off than 99% of the people who pay their salaries.

I can understand where some of these personal complaints are coming from but as a current MCPS teacher I can say these situations are not the norm. Some people wash out. Some staff face personality conflicts or admin have favorites. Coming from the private sector, I have to say this stuff happens anywhere you have people working together is stressful situations. Lots of people double down emotionally in times of stress and this can increase conflicts. My biggest gripe right now is the increasing discipline problems in school. Kids are are seeing a lot of behaviors go unpunished and are emulating it.

I wonder if it was teacher stress related. I remember the 4 hrs sleep nights up past midnight grading disrespect from all directions impossible teacher ratings unsupportive office. Its just become a dangerous unhealthy profession. Don't let your boss take your spirit and health down.

How long have you been teaching?

I work with someone 5 years in. He's our team leader who is high on the kool aid. I've been teaching over 4 times longer than he has. We are a dying breed.

We've seen it all. I've worn many hats: teacher (high and low students), SDT, administrator (short-lived, TERRIBLE), and specialist. No position is more important than classroom teacher. So while I've tried to find my happy spot, classroom teacher isn't it b/c the system makes it impossible to do what's best for kids.

I doubt you've been around long enough to see how sick the system has become. Autonomy is dead.

So yes, we have the right to complain.

Anonymous wrote:I agree with the poster who trusts no one in Central Office. I agree with this 100% - not only are they useless, I would say they actively cause harm to thousands of teachers and tens of thousands of students every day. Ridiculous policies (extra busywork for teachers), more unnecessary tests for students, doing away with special ed positions that supported students and so much more.

A good amount of the people in central office are failed administrators who need to be hidden, lazy teachers who talk a good game and don't want to be burdened with a classroom, etc. Very few people go into central office because they're passionate about that type of work. The passionate people want to stay close to kids.

I am the PP. I did not advise going to just anyone in central. A good percent of the people there—like 85%— are power hungry and incompetent. I said to go to someone in compliance who they could talk to confidentially. That office is different and those people have helped several teachers I know. But be careful anyway. Make sure you know what they plan to do before authorizing them to share what you disclose.

And how is someone supposed to know who they can talk to confidentially in the compliance office? Just take a stab at the email addresses listed on the website? Name names or this isn’t helpful at all.

Just confirm it will be confidential, but start here:

How do you work only 180 days when there is 180 instructional days and we’re required to report on at least 10 additional non-instructional days. Are you sure you aren’t a paraeducator?

That person doesn’t even work in a school. Just a pot stirrer.

Stop lying. Even if you have reached full retirement after 30 yrs, you will get about 50% of your salary.
Since each year counts 7.5 % less, by working 20 years you will be receiving 75% less, which is 25% of your retirement resulting in 12% of your annual salary.
So if you are making $80.000 now, you will be receiving $9600 upon retirement.

This is what is demoralizing to the teachers that I know.
