WaPo takes deep dive into DCPS residency fraud

Anonymous
You could have people renting even if you paid it. OSSE and DCPS don't have the manpower to investigate this type of situation. That's one reason they started up the tipsline.

Internal investigation finds more than 150 students out of around 500 at Ellington live outside of the city, one has to assume without paying tuition because their cases have been forwarded to the attorney general's office. Another 50 have been flagged for "less serious problems" that have been sent to OSSE, per WaPo reporter:

That's nearly 50 percent of the school. Wow.

This is a brutal takedown of the issues at DCPS. And for Ellington, the crown jewel $200M or whatever building, it is an indictment of largess of ridiculous proportions.

I wonder if this might push someone to run against Bowser as an independent?

WaPo story is up:

"At least 150 students — more than a quarter of the student body — at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, one of D.C.’s most desirable public schools, do not appear to live in the city and are not paying tuition required of non-resident students, an internal investigation has concluded."

Or the school has historically accepted kids from outside DC and out of caution they simply referred all of out city students to the attorney general for them to figure out who is paying tuition and who is not.
I also would not be surprised if parents who wanted to pay tuition couldn't do so because they school or the city couldn't figure out the process or else they paid and the city or school didn't keep track

Oh snap.

I wonder what the downstream ramifications of this will be, both for Ellington and for other schools.

WOW - I had assumed it was poor paper work - tis is fraud! Not only do I hope they get back tuition - but any other "school" benefits they stole from DC taxpayers (spring break international trips that other students did not qualify for)

the article says just over a quarter .... ? I feel like they would have led with *50%* if that was the case.

Why do we even pay tax dollars to OSSE for an annual enrollment audit if they can't even conduct an audit?

150 fraudsters plus 50 more semi-fraudsters = 40 percent, aka "nearly 50 percent."

Grosso statement: "Today’s report not only confirms the stunning depth of residency fraud at Duke Ellington, but also that the previous two chancellors had repeatedly lied to the Committee and the Council about how profound this problem is."

Not being familiar with what he's talking about, do chancellors testify in such situations under oath? If so, isn't that basically perjury?

There were 566 kids at Ellington this year.

It's still a Sh*t-ton of out of state students.

After Antwan, the council has finally figured out that this is an issue that voting taxpayers care about.

I don't think you've ever had to go through the bureaucratic process which is enrolling a child in D.C.

I was flagged with a "less serious problem" this year because my Husband insisted on signing the form with me. That didn't meet some requirement and I had to come in and re-sign the form by myself for it to "count". That aside, I'm going to stick with WaPo's math, thanks.
