WaPo takes deep dive into DCPS residency fraud

Did other people get sent home a letter from Amanda Alexander, Interim Chancellor about changes to enrollment at Duke Ellington? I felt like this was not nearly enough of a response - it needs to be across the entire DCPS system. This needs to be a bigger city issue.

Bowser could not give less of a shit about this. It will not be an issue unless voters make it an issue.

"We are committed to ensuring every school follows enrollment policies for School Year 2018-2019 and beyond. Going forward, we will implement additional enrollment supports at Duke Ellington and ensure seats are prioritized for district students before tuition-paying, out-of-state students. As more families choose DC Public Schools, and we work toward our goal of serving 54,000 students by 2022-2023, families can access enrollment forms at enrolldcps.dc.gov to enroll at a DCPS school with the proper forms."

and offers a hotline for residency fraud.

Unfortunately I can’t post a link but The Post has a story up about Wilson basketball coach on leave while DCPS investigates eligibility of players (based on residency concerns).

This seems to be at the root of the issue:

..."Two transfer players were consistent contributors throughout the season. Junior guard Jay Heath, a 2017-18 All-Met honorable mention, and sophomore forward Dimingus Stevens transferred to Wilson from O’Connell before the year.

The Tigers also expect two high-profile transfers to bolster their frontcourt next season. Makhi and Makhel Mitchell, twin 6-foot-9 power forwards who verbally committed to the University of Maryland for the Class of 2019, returned to the Washington, D.C. area after playing last season at national champion Montverde Academy (Fla.). The rising seniors enrolled at Wilson in early April, according to a person with knowledge of the situation, and attended Bishop McNamara in District Heights, Md., before their season at the Florida prep school.

The handbook of the D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association for 2017-18 states that every player must submit a residency verification form to be eligible to play, while transfer students wanting to participate in athletics must meet one of several criteria, including proof of permanent residency in the school’s district, to be immediately eligible."

I think the issue the Post refers to isn't the 2 kids, but whether the coach was aware of the issue / aided and abetted it.

No- in the wilson bb article above. It's all about 2 student transfers.

"A person with knowledge of the investigation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe an ongoing process, said the investigation is focused on at least two players’ residencies and could take around six months to complete. "

They have six months to get their stuff in order in boundary and everyone can say "nothing to see here."

100 percent chance I'm sending my kids to Wilson. It's just too easy to cheat and I don't plan to be a sucker.
