Any sensible boundaries for Skyview (1) pull a lot of kids out of Westfield and (2) require steps to add kids there from other schools well before any new construction would yield significant numbers of new students at Westfield. |

This is complete BS. It’s the exact opposite. Kids are being bused way too way so wealthier neighborhoods can avoid schools with more demographic balance. |
The longest bus rides in the county are to stronger schools. Great Falls ES is far closer to Herndon then Langley but is bussed to Langley. Crossfield is closer to Skyview then Oakton but many parents want to stay at Oakton, even with the long bus ride. Crossfield is a bit different in that Skyview is likely to be a very good school but it will have a higher FARMs rate then Oakton currently does. Some RIO parents have been very clear that they don't want to attend Skyview because they see the McNair and Coates kids as being the "problem children" at Carson. Their words, not mine. |
It's not so they can avoid more demographic balance. It's so they can avoid a worse-performing/behaving school that will in turn decrease their property value. |
I would amend the last one on the list to: Oakton > Chantilly A lot of folks believe this. |
agreed but people wouldn't put up a huge fight either way. I think if Skyview = Chantilly, the Oakton crowd would be ok with it because of the trade-off in proximity |
Some of Chantilly also has to move to Westfield, a sizable chunk, like one full elementary school. |
This is exactly the problem which is why I think its better to have less cohesive HS boundaries and pull some kids from each surrounding HS to avoid emptying Westfield out completely (the least attractive school) and then trying to refill it. |
| In the comprehensive all-county boundary adjustment that they just did, did they end up moving any neighborhoods from better high schools to weaker high schools? |
Agree, someone posted yesterday an explanation of the FARMs numbers in the area. Moving the proposed parts of Centreville will increase Westfield's numbers (already the highest school), and its already the red-headed step child of western FCPS. If they are concerned about "equity" they should move one of the wealthier Chantilly ESes. |
|
If Westfield has a student population way out of whack with what its neighboring schools will have (skyview, chantilly), then FCPS should take this opportunity to try to address that. Someone has to be moved anyway and there are zero obvious choices--might as well pick a neighborhood that will balance the schools out a little.
And it sounds like ALL the Chantilly HS elementary school zones are much closer than any other options. |
Shush! You are going to summon that pissed-off Lees Corner mom. Its like saying Beetlejuice three times. |
If you can't read the maps, you should just see yourself out of this conversation. We aren't going to explain every little nuance to you. |
You don’t have a specific example. So you don’t have a case to prevent a move due to proximity. |
