500+ students for both fields road and crown from rosemont. It could grow to 1000 as there are still new housing development. It doesn’t work for capacity unless they move some Wootton ES out.

And this is why I keep saying they need to move out Dufief and parts of Travilah out. Fields Road belongs in Crown so to accommodate them something has to go out from Wootton.

And I keep saying A-D has Dufief at Crown, E-H has Dufief at Wootton, the county is saying no more official options, so will they just completely blindside Dufief and move them to QO? They probably would, but doing that is a complete violation of trust in the process.

Wasn't Dufief to QO at one point? Wouldnt really be a blindside right? Or did they replace QO with Crown?

Couple of the round 1 June options had them going to QO when they were doing all the crazy redistricting everywhere but MCPS has repeatedly said that strategy is off the table- and those options are off the table- now that the regional model is part of the boundary study. So yeah, you could say it isn't a complete blindside. Instead it would be an outright lie.

Strategies change based on other needs. Wootton going to Crown was never part of the plan then but then Wootton parents put up a big show with petitions flying around to save their children from an unsafe school. MCPS listened and now you have Option H. And Fields Road community is opposed to going elsewhere than their neighborhood school and who could blame them. MCPS has to listen to them too.

Wootton parents got what they asked for with regards to a safe school. And if Dufief or Travilah has to move to accommodate Fields Road so be it. It makes logical sense that Fields Road goes to Crown, not Dufief or Travilah. You can thank the Wootton parents who circulated those petitions.

Yeap we definitely should thank those parents because Wootton is one of the oldest buildings and constantly pushed back and off of the CIP.

If anyone should be mad at anyone, the anger should be directed towards the decision makers who allowed the maintenance to get pushed back to this extent.

Then remember this when it comes time for elections which parties and groups to affiliate with.

You can't have it all. There will be unhappy parents no matter what they do.

By moving Wootton to Crown and adding Fields Road, they just have a new set of walkers - the Fields Road ES cluster.

And if they move Dufief or Travilah to QO, it should not matter since they will be be bussed a shorter distance now and that is a good thing right?

Not what those schools want, they don't mind the extra mile on the bus, but their feedback doesn't matter, right? Just everyone else's.

I'm sure they don't, but it does not work that way does it? MCPS has to consider all factors and decide what is best.

But that’s the point the Wootton families are trying to make-There are numerous high schools closer to Wootton neighborhoods than Crown so how does it make sense to move there? If you are using the distance as a factor the whole option H should be thrown out.

Yes I was initially on board with option H but now with all of the proposed changes it’s not the same option. I’m 100% for either holding school option, E or F. Still saves the county a ton of money versus A-D and we don’t have all of this chaotic change.

G as a hybrid makes no sense. Administration would be impossible.

I'm 100% AGAINST the holding school option since it does not address Gaithersburg or QO's overcrowding issues.

To me its just two options:
1) A new Crown and rezone all the schools in the vicinity (which means Dufief will move whether they like it or not) if they go wth A-D
2) Option H with Dufief or Travilah moving if Fields Road dos not back down

I believe that Fields Road deserves to be in Crown no matter what school it is called.

Are A-D even being considered now? It seems they are predetermined on H

H won’t go through if Wootton families make enough noise. As much as the threads show a lot of support-the actual Wootton parents in real life are not in favor of it. Specifically Fallsmead-which is losing their walkable high school. There is a petition which has already received a considerable amount of signatures. Yes we are all aware that Wootton is falling apart but most parents think option H is worse.

There are at least initial conversions happening what current Wootton families will do if H gets approved and one of those options is to protest by all on the same day/all at once -withdrawing all of our current Wootton kids to homeschool until MCPS comes to their senses.

You honestly don't even have to withdraw your students. You can just have them have a sick out and/or stop turning in notes for absences and have them all unexcused.

You can even time the sickouts during the testing window.

I was going to suggest this earlier on this issue and other issues I have with some of the proposals MCPS has.

This includes just picking up and moving.

But other then the moving (well slightly the case), the rest is just politics and using my kids as tools or pawns for my beliefs. Which isn't right. I'm not saying these recent speakers are the same case but I've seen cases where parents force their kids to speak at board meetings and the kids are crying up there.

Like I said, realistically I won't have my kids skip school or purposely tank any tests over politics. But if you're really considering withdrawing your kids for home school, I think the absences would be more realistic and effective. There's usually no instruction during testing windows anyways.

Forgot to mention this should only be done for elementary and middle school students who are not taking any credit courses. High school students with more then five days of unexcused absences could face loss of credit. The absence policy is here:

This. Plus you are going to lose the schools like Dufief and Travilah who may have supported option H if they are at risk of getting rezoned from Wootton if this goes forward. They’d be safer with the holding school options.

And you think Gaithersburg is going to keep quiet if Crown is used as a holding school?

When it’s over 3 miles away?-it’s a new school but it’s not Wootton’ families new school. It was never supposed to be.

I mean, yeah? 3 miles isn't far. If you prefer the old school closer to your house to the brand-new school down the road, I'm gonna assume that school is actually perfectly fine.

3 miles is a problem for you? I take it you are not a Travilah parent? The kids from some areas that feed to Travilah travel 5 miles to go to Wootton.

Not a Travilah parent-and have always thought it was crazy that they go to Wootton. it’s never made any sense.

Anonymous wrote:The claims about Dufief being picked on for diversity and socioeconomics are incredibly disingenuous.

Most of the black/Hispanic and lower income diversity at Dufief comes from the Learning Center self-contained special ed students, which makes up almost 33% of the school. If it weren't for the Learning Center, the school would be more like Monocacy ES in size.

The Learning Center students are pulled from multiple clusters and most of them don't have Frost or Wootton as their home school anyway. They are being pulled in from high-FARMS neighborhoods like Meadow Hall, Twinbrook, and Brown Station. Some kids are coming from as far as Poolesville, because Dufief is the assigned Learning Center placement for all these neighborhoods. When it comes time for middle school, the placement decisions are made based on their home address, not Dufief.

Stop pointing to racial and socioeconomic diversity without any understanding of what's actually behind those numbers. The Dufief feeder zone without the Learning Center kids is quite well-off enough and is not any more diverse than Stone Mill or Travilah.

Learning center info is valid. But I disagree that the school isn’t diverse outside of the learning center. Also, check price of average cost of homes in each neighborhood and tell us all three schools are equal.

True to an extent, but it's kind of a distinction without a real difference. And the change.org petition says "Decrease diversity in Wootton and Frost by removing DuFief, a school with significantly more free and reduced-price meals, African American, and Hispanic students"

The FARMS and the Black/Hispanic students are almost entirely Learning Center kids who don't live in the neighborhood and won't attend Wootton cluster schools anyway. Very misleading.

The information to verify what you are claiming is not publicly available. How are you so sure their statements are misleading?

Because the neighborhood people can see their kids' classes and homes with their eyes and there's a directory. It's not difficult to infer.

Well ya it is a problem for me since my kids can walk to Wootton in less than 2 minutes.

One of the best ways to make noise is to show up and vote and even better to have representation. Some board members, current and present, have been accused of watching out for the self interests of their areas, which in some ways is what they're supposed to do.

Here's the current list of candidates for next year's election:

Of course they won’t be quiet but these holding school options save the county something like $300M. H could make a decent amount of people happy, but as PP pointed out if all of Wootton hates it, it likely won’t happen. The schools that already bus and don’t care as much about a location move, assuming Wootton is still Wootton, (Dufief Travilah and stone mill) won’t go for it either now if they think they wouldn’t be included in Wootton anymore.

+1

Field Rd should go to Crown no matter what the school is called. No point in taking walk zone students and then ship them somehwere else when you are drawing a new boundary.

made to add Fields road to option H. How big are Rosemont and Fields road? Wootton already has a pretty significant population so I imagine this would just be another situation of making a school overcrowded right from the get go which kind of defeats the entire purpose? Also, I hate that The middle schools don’t go to high school together-that is so backwards and I haven’t seen that in any other district I have lived in. You basically have to start over in High School.

Good luck with that.

The absence policy is here:

https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/jeara.pdf

From what I understand, it seems like having the absences excused would be the better route.

Unexcused absences can risk in repercussions for the student.

Excused absences are still grouped together and counted towards chronic absence numbers but doesn't look like there are any notable consequences for excessive excused absences?

The main thing to watch out for is that there isn't ten days of consecutive absences or else they can break the enrollment and just treat the absence days as nonenrolled days and reset the counter. So it's better to have the absences count under on continuous enrollment and maybe take a couple of days here and there until it totals more then ten percent to be counted as chronically absent.
