I wouldn’t look into this too much. His name is gone from the directory this morning. My guess is they were waiting to announce his departure, and then changes were deployed to the website overnight.

We decided to leave the school so no longer get communication. He was made 4/5th head with MS before the yeah ended and is now full lower? It doesn’t surprise me (what other choice did they have since assistant head could no longer take the LS grades), but this is going to be a real stress on DB. I hope this setup is only realllllly temp and not all year. That’s going to be 8 extra grades for him and not even the age group he is expert at. DB and the MS at least was the better run of the 3 divisions, I worry this will ruin that now.

I wonder why the assistant head of lower school (JG) wasn’t tapped for the interim head position? When we were in the lower school, I remember when he was brought in as a counselor. (I don’t remember when he was promoted to assistant head.)

The previous decision to tap DB as both MS and intermediate division head as well as the latest decision to also have him lead LS are acts of desperation. This is simply and frustratingly a case of needing a body. He is not a good leader to begin with in my opinion but even if you don't agree with that assessment, we should all be concerned when a school is making desperate decisions of filling positions with whatever bodies are available rather than the thoughtful recruitment AND retention of dynamic people with the right experience.

Agree with this. The choice to split the division in the spring was a reactionary decision because RG did not want to open a search for a new Head of the Lower School. This decision was likely made because there were no other internal options following the mass exodus of teachers and staff this spring, and because the school is struggling financially and they can’t afford someone external. Hopefully we will learn more during the listening sessions next week.

I don’t think JG would be a good fit for that position. Possibly wouldn’t be helot as interim head either. So I can understand why he wasn’t put in that role.

Right now everything is reactionary - starting from the LS IS split - to all the interim head decisions. It may even be that the board making these decisions now fully understand these are not good solutions but these are the only options available at present. I only hope that this isn’t going to be the solution for the entire 24-25 year and is a stop gap measure for the summer until something more reasonable can be planned.

I’m curious to know how the meeting went last night with faculty and staff. Hopefully their voices were heard and they can get the help and resources they need as soon as possible.

I agree, he did a great job.

Big loss for SSFS!

Isn’t that going to depend on their financial situation?

Pp again-an earlier post referenced this departure as well as the assistant head of athletics. If that’s true it was (another) bad move to not mention both departures in the email.

The assistant head of athletics was let go in June as part of budget layoffs.

So they are doing the very very prolonged pull the bandaid off reveal of the situation then…

They've refrained from announcing departures in the past too. Not sure why.....

Usually schools want a replacement hired before they announce a departure.

I agree. All MS families should be worried about this. I know I am. We have tuition insurance and are seriously thinking about backing-out. We went through this with another school and don't want to be around for another implosion. I hope this me thinking overdramatically but I don't know how DB is going to handle all of this but with our kids having the same experience as they have in the past.

I don’t think tuition insurance covers withdrawing because you are worried about the school experience. Just check before you go down that path mentally.

My kid has been in all three divisions and middle school was hands down the best. I hope it continues to be the experience for your family!

Remember the assistant heads in LS and MS will be taking on bigger roles this year. It’s not like he’s having to do PK3-8 all by himself.
