University of Richmond thoughts

Nice campus, small classes, unique curriculum on leadership and flexibility to do a lot of stuff. I was impresssed. Seems some have sour grapes. It seems to fill a nice niche--not so small like all the NE schools that have less than 2000, but also not so big like tech where you get lost and sit in a lecture room. They also don't seem to nickle and dime you to death.

FYI- their stats would suggest this is not a school of NY/NJ. 28% mid-atlantic, 20% south, 17% New england, 11% international, 6% mid west and 4% west coast. To me this seems more like an East coast school with a mix of north and south. The students we met were the most well spoken I've seen in these tours....confident and comfortable in their own skin.

Over 40% of their students come from with NY/NJ/PA/CT. That’s a lot for a school in Virginia.

Yeah. It’s a niche school for private school kids from those 4 states who can’t get in anywhere else.

Why all the hate? It’s a decent school.

It’s a school that’s not worth the price tag. Mediocre school. Ivy League prices. Nothing special. Send your kid there if you choose. But there are far better options out there.

Not sure it’s decent school.
Guess it depends on your criteria for decent.

Some of you are really unusually cruel. I know several kids who are currently looking at Richmond as their top option. They are strong students (A's SAT 1500+, etc) and great kids.

If you hadn't noticed it's been an incredibly competitive admissions season and there are lots of kids who did everything right and didn't get into their reach schools.

Sorry to hear that. I have heard it’s been a tough admission season. There are a lot of great options out there for kids with good stats. Just not sure I’d put UR in that group.

I hope they didn’t just apply to reaches and Richmond. Hard to believe that Richmond is their top option.

Agree. Feel bad for these kids. Sounds like they got poor college counseling advice. High stats kids still have great options if they build in enough safeties and possibles. To be left with only Richmond seems odd.

If you believe the commentary about UR is excessive cruelty, ignore and move on. Don't take internet commentators personally.

My daughter got into UR EA. I was never her top choice. She’s going elsewhere. Just laid the deposit. So excited! We both found the comments on this thread helpful, even though my daughter relied on her own impressions of UR when making her decision.

Why all the Richmond hate? It has truly extraordinary institutional wealth.

I’m so sorry to hear this. Feel super bad for high stats kids that get stuck with Richmond. Did they apply to other schools? State flagship? Liberal arts schools that are less selective? I personally would be thrilled to send my kid to many/most of the LACs ranked 30-50 in the US News. So many wonderful colleges. Best of luck. Sending good thoughts to those kids.

It seems like you're contradicting yourself? Richmond is ranked #22, not that it matters.
