NYU for a preppy waspy girl?

Anonymous
My D thinks she wants to apply ED to NYU. I have no idea why, she is very preppy and thought she wanted a small liberal arts school. She was in NY for a week and came back sure that is where she wants to go to school. All I hear about is how there is a heavily gay, Jewish population that is very liberal. She is very conservative and protestant, I don't think she knows what she would be getting into. Any input you care to add?

I'm sure she'll fit in just fine. Maybe she is not as conservative as you think.

Not so sure that will be a great fit, but you never know…PP may be right that your DD may not be as conservative as you think. And certainly after some time spent at NYU she won't be anymore….

NYU is definitely a school that you need to truly feel is the right place. Have you toured the school yet? If not, then you definitely need to do that and do it when school is in session. Also, do you know anyone who has a child there that she could talk to or visit and spend some time at the school? I believe they have a ED2 with a Jan 1 deadline so you would still have some time to look around before making the commitment.

FWIW, OP - my DD absolutely loved NYU and was determined that it was the place she wanted to be. However, she still wanted a choice and applied regular decision. In the end she decided that it's not the place for her. She wanted a campus and a bit more of a traditional American college experience. NYU didn't fit the bill for this. She chose another school in the NE. She is keeping NYU in mind for graduate school, however.

Good luck!

Is she a strong student? If so how about Columbia? It is true that there is a very big gay and very Jewish population and that for the most part it is a very liberal student body. My husband taught there for 2 years, so we know it well.

It would not have been a good fit for either of our kids, it is a school you MUST visit to get the flavor and see if it might be a good fit or not.

Are we really going to answer this thread by telling OP where her daughter can avoid gays and Jews?

OP send your daughter to college in Germany in 1940 if this is how you feel. Disgusting.

Your dd is probably one of the gays.

She wants to hunt for alpha bankers

Yes, seriously. News flash--there will be Jews and gays everywhere (except for maybe Brigham Young).

OP, I think it matters most what your daughter wants to study. Location is important--not everyone is cut out for a city campus or a rural one.

College is about expanding your horizons and opening your eyes to the rest of the world. Let her go and grow.

Is your DD not interested in gays and Jews, or is it that you would prefer that your DD not know any? News flash, OP: your DD has multiple gay acquaintances and even friends. Right now. Right near the church that you make your DD attend. In fact, in the church. Truth.

Columbia has lots of gays and Jews. Lots of liberals, too. Honestly, though, her decision should NOT be boiled down to this.

NYU has less of a "campus" feel than many other colleges. If by "preppy" you mean she has visions of playing frisbee in a gothic- or classical-style quad, NYU is not the place.

Oh come on. Anyone from Montgomery County would understand the challenges a WASPY conservative would face in assimilating into a predominantly liberal, Jewish gay student body. Not saying it's impossible just challenging - as it would be for a liberal Jewish person to assimilate into BYU.

That said, the perception of NYU as mostly Jewish is mistaken - it's about 28% http://www.hillel.org/college-guide/list/record/new-york-university

To the extent it matters, I'm Jewish, but grew up on the west coast where there is much greater assimilation.

OMG, are we really talking about the challenges a WASPY conservative feels being around Jews?

OP's DD doesn't care, she's the one who wants to go to NYU. Its OP who fears the cauldron of gay Jews.

By the way, we're everywhere.
