NYU is very liberal there are plenty gay people, lots of Jews bu also many others too. it is a real melting pot. Isn't' that why you want your daughter going after all? To experience the world and people?
It does not however have that typical college feel or campus and feels like a school within a big city, no campus feeling whatsoever. Son did a summer program there two years ago and realized it was not for him, he ended up in school in California. But as with any school do check it out before she applies. I am giving you the benefit of the doubt in assuming you were not saying you question if it is for her because of the Jews and gays, just that that was n added observation? |
FWIW, I went to NYU for grad school and it seemed that all of the undergrads were Asian. |
I'm going to guess that more non-Jews attend NYU than Jews. May be it would do you and your daughter some good to actually meet some Jews. Jews are a beautiful people with very diverse views of the world. I don't know if you know much about them, but Jews are both liberal and conservative. Did you know that they all don't think alike? I promise. |
This reminds me of a great scene from the movie "Terms of Endearment". Emma, the heroine is dying of cancer, so her childhood friend Patsy, a WASPY, blonde from Dallas who moved to NYC when she married, invites her to come visit, though they haven't been in touch for some time.
Patsy: "It was so interesting dating Jews after the divorce." Emma: "Really?" Patsy: "Yes, they're so lively." |
OP here my daughter is friends with many Jews as am I, I think I worded it in a way that made it sound like thats an issue. Sorry!! Ditto gays. I just feel like it might be out of her comfort zone and that's the reason I am not sure if it is a good fit. |
Hard to understand exactly the issue. Is it the Jews or the gays or both? NYU probably does have a high percentage of each due to the location (but, possibly other reasons as well). Hopefully its not a "people" thing that is causing the aversion here. Sounds as if DC would be better off attending one of the New England Waspy LACs. |
I'm Jewish. I love Jews. I love Gays. I love any Christian friends who don't judge me like the Catholic friend I once had who told me she couldn't believe I got my daughter via IVF. That was the end of her. I'm straight and from the Midwest..a Jewish straight Midwesterner. ![]() But, I don't want my sweet little MD Jewish Girl going to NYU. I went to school on a BIG TEN campus and loved it. NYU is too city and not enough campus. But that is just me and it's how I picture college.. a big campus, sports, etc. I guess you want what you can relate to. Funny thread. |
It's funny, because some of my best friends are black! |
I'm half Jewish and I didn't want my dd going to GW because of its heavy Jewish population. Many people meet their spouses in college. Having grown up 1/2 and 1/2, I wouldn't recommend it. |
You know what is even funnier - the All in the Family episode where Archie Bunker eulogizes his good friend Stretch Cunningham, nee Kornhold!!! "Now, nothin' against bein' Jewish. Jesus was Jewish 'til his father said nor more o dat!" ![]() |
Hmmm. I wouldn't want my DD to go to GW because it is too expensive. |
I think Columbia/Barnard might be a better fit, unless OP's DD is looking to be kind of Ashley/Mary Kate-ish, which involves lots of money, fashion and (remember Heath Ledger) drugs. |
Parents of the Jewish kids would not have appreciated your "shiksa" dd anyway, so bullet dodged on both sides. |
