2) Fallback schools that my kid didn't hope to attend but now attends. Now, my kid LOVES it and it's the BEST.

We all have our rationalizations.

This. Especially to THE person that keeps typing UVA. Let’s just say they have an identifiable style.

Colorado is freaking gorgeous and booming. In contract to say Michigan, which is grey, cold and flat. And outside of Ann Arbor, the state is full of opioid overdoses and overall in steep decline (losing another congressional district this year).

OK, but MI has beaches, and it has skiing, too.

There are no beaches anywhere near Ann Arbor and the skiing in Michigan is a joke (and several hours north of Ann Arbor at that). Boulder >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ann Arbor

I'm guessing you're not a XC skier.

I'm hoping this is sarcasm

No. Sailing on Lake MI? Grand Haven? South Haven?

Hey now, I LOVE Big Snow and Boyne. I have so many happy memories. Michigan has a ton of skiing.

Grand Haven is great and so is Glen Arbor.

My legs hurt for weeks after my novice trudge across Sleeping Bear Dunes. We made a special trip on the way home from Mackinac.

Michigan has some tremendous natural beauty.

+1, some of the best beaches in this country are in Michigan, bar none.

Boulder is one of the prettiest towns in the U.S., with nearby access to truly world class skiing.

Michigan skiing is kiddie hills compared to Colorado. And Lake Michigan beaches are 2 to 4 hours away from Ann Arbor.

Boulder jabs are obviously from people who have never been there but like to pretend to be experts on everything. And also from middle class who can't fathom having so much money you can let your kids go where ever they want for college; private or out-of-state tuition at a public U, who cares.

Didn't like Boulder. Sadly, the University parking garages had homeless encampments. Didn't like the pot smell everywhere, enough of that here in DC. Great school though with a stunning setting, just not for us.

How is Michigan in-state for us? C'mon; this is silly.

I think UVA is overhyped on this board. By that, I mean too much importance is being attached to admission by families and students. If your kid is not admitted, it is not the end of the world. Their outcomes are likely not going to be much different if your kid attends another school instead and applies his or her self there. It also isn't good to convey this "you've got it made" message to kids going to UVA. There will be lots of challenges and competition ahead.

Michigan is a better school by any metric. UC is a good school in a fantastic setting.

And yes, I guess you have never heard of the dunes in Michigan. Yes, of course the skiing in Colorado is better. That is why busloads of UM students go to skii out west during breaks every year.

Just to clear up any potential confusion, the University of Colorado at Boulder is known as CU, or CU Boulder, not UC.

(And weirdly, same for University of Denver, which is referred to as DU.)

I've always found this strange, but understand not wanting to confuse the CA universities.
