Here is why we should close schools now.

I think widespread closures are not going help much re spread. Closures like what Scarsdale is doing makes sense. I'm not convinced the science is there to justify across the board closures absent a situation like Scarsdale. It will also significantly impact availability of healthcare workers.

I feel like a lot of posters in this thread are very, very out of touch with the reality of working for most Americans. The vast majority of Americans do not live in 5,000 sq ft Bethesda mansions with a SAH parent who can stay with them, or have easy telework jobs. The reality is that closing the schools means kids are going to be taken to workplaces, or out in other public locations. People have to work and will work, and they'll take their kids with them.

TO WORRY OR NOT WORRY... IS IT EVEN A QUESTION?

If you have no kids at all, you should not worry..?
If you have no school age kids, you should not worry..?
If your kids don’t go to R.Frost, you should worry..?

Right? ... Wrong!!!

Here is a potential spread for you:

A kid is a R. Frost student ——-> his sister or brother goes to any given magnet high school ——-> he is in contact with other HS magnet students commuting from all school clusters———> their younger siblings will take it to their home schools and give it to other students who....—-> have siblings in other high schools and elementary and middle schools——-> who have siblings in preschools and other schools ——all of those kids have parents who will be exposed ——> who have coworkers who have no kids who will be exposed——> who will go shopping where you shop...

I came across this study by Singapore doctors. They found coronavirus almost everywhere in a hospital room that a patient stayed in.

Oregon has decided to emulate Iran and just let the virus spread.

Not even going to attempt to contact trace and quarantine.

Portland will soon be on the no fly list.

so what do they do during the summer?

Local parks, libraries, community centers, etc. Distribute free breakfast and lunch. This is a local area benefit (meaning the community is low income, do every child who shows up for a meal is presumed eligible). If you don't live in a low income area you probably haven't seen this happen. . Where I live there are banners in every park. We also have free meals at all community centers when schools are closed for weather and most after school programs provide a free dinner.

I’m so glad to hear programs like this exist.

People who can’t work and won’t get paid could lose their jobs, and then their homes. We need something more concrete than a handful of cases to make this decision. It’s too soon. As this week brings us more information, we can reevaluate.

More concrete than a handful of cases? By then it's too late by the time you have a handful of cases. I am not sure how many times people need to see this played out before we get smart. I prefer to take advice from the ones that have gone through this By the time you see even a few it has been in for awhile. Case, case, case, cluster, cluster, boom its that simple
As far as child care while that is an issue it is not nearly as big of an issue as widespread in infection. The only way to stop this is get the transmission rate below 1, you dont do that by waiting

Online education; Switch summer break to extend winter break. Here we have Spring Break is coming, why not have a early spring break to allow people have a self quarantine? Especially here is the fact:

Many students from both Wootton High and RFMS volunteered at the Village at Rockville after Feb. 28. We are extremely concerned that these individuals are NOT considered at risk of contracting the virus. The incubation period of this virus can be as long as 24 days or longer. Some people who have contracted the virus may not even exhibit any symptom but can still be contagious.

I bolded the hysteria

That's not hysteria, that is what the perood has been extended to in china. I trust their experience more than your opinion.

Exactly. Some children rely on schools for food. And many more parents need child care so they can work. If you have an hourly paid job with no leave and are living paycheck to paycheck, having your child suddenly have no school means you might be out of a job. People need to think broader before saying we need to close schools.

In Italy the hospitals are near the breaking point. It is spreading like wild fire. Wake up.
A first step to stem the tide of this virus is to close schools. People need to start preparing for this, and the local government needs to put a plan in place for parents who need help with food and child care.
We can?t just bury our heads in the sand.

Their experience is with a population full of people with unhealthy, polluted lungs. Whatever the incubation period, we don?t have the same problem.

PP said ?as long as? not that it?s that long for everyone. What she said is factually true. It?s also true that most people have an incubation period of 1-2 weeks but as short as 1-3 days or as long as 3 weeks are possible in some cases. If enough people get it, we will have outliers on both extremes. That?s just a fact. Honestly, 1-2 weeks of being contagious and feeling fine is bad enough that it should already have people worried.
