I'm in my early 40s and subbed for years. No way in hell would I be willing to sub when there's a widespread public health risk. There would not be many people willing to do this for ~$100/day.

Younger subs? There are not any sub. Have you been following the sun shortage before this and how many jobs we have that don’t get filled every day? Teachers cover each other on our planning blocks and many of the subs we have in my school are retired teachers coming back to work part time.

Please abolish mandatory public schools. Kids learn nothing in them, they kill so many kids, and they are logistical nightmares. There’s literally no reason everyone has to go to school, only for schools to waste valuable resources like teachers on kids who don’t even care while those who do lag behind.

Start a new thread, maybe.

I am 40, immunocompromised and diabetic. My child attends a frost feeder elementary but we cannot self-quarantine because he just missed 3 days of school due to a bad cold and I have used up my sick days. I also know of many at risk children at our school. Closing schools would not just benefit “one person”.

Well, you do like your UNeducated voters. But as a teacher, I see public schools as essential to democracy. And as an AA whose grandmother was denied a high school education because her town didn’t provide 9-12th grade for black people, I find it offensive to decide who does or does not need to go to school. The good people of my grandmother’s town wanted black boys in the fields by age 14 and black girls in the white folk’s kitchens.

NP, but why resort to calling names? Especially when many on this thread have commented on how coronavirus barely affects children.

Everyone 40+ or with diabetes, lung conditions or heart conditions, or autoimmune conditions stay home from work and we let the younger generation take the risk of something that is for them just 10x as bad as seasonal flu?

Those 40+ with kids will either keep the kids home with them, or send the kids to live elsewhere for a while to be exposed to the virus and recover.

I think that is an acceptable compromise.

I fit that profile but tell that to my agency that actually ELIMINATED a lot of telework for many positions out of the fields nationwide a few months ago saying they are trying to increase productivity. New leadership has been trying to eliminate our partial week telework policy too (large operation with more than 1,000 positions in headquarters here in DMV). The new commissioner is a Trump appointee, actually a college classmate of his with no background to lead our agency. I don't see my agency's leadership allowing 5 day telework even for a temporary period. I am actually going to start using my leave.

So districts will lower standards to 18 with a HS Diploma. Oh, and you can work “under supervision” while we complete your background check” because the schools must remain open.

That won't happen. There's a whole bunch of districts that have already shut down and more to come. Doesn't matter what people on this site want, there'll be mass closures. I fully expect that, before the end of the year, we'll see NYC schools or DC schools or Chicago schools etc, etc, shut down. Many, many districts will close.

I agree and I suspect some No Va schools will close within the next week and possibly Md too.

Here's a middle school in Oregon, just outside of Portland, with a student who tested positive. They are not closing the school.

The district says they have been consulting with the Oregon Health Authority, Oregon Department of Education and the Washington County Health Department to determine a response.

Based on their guidance, officials say they will not be closing the school. They say updated guidance from the OHA and WCHD is that closing schools may not be an effective method for stopping the spread of the virus.

The ill student will continue their isolation until they are well. Anyone determined to be at an enhanced risk of exposure will be contacted and asked to self-isolate, officials said.

South Meadows Middle School will receive an enhanced cleaning Sunday evening.

This decision won't age well....
