This. Maret does not care. They have what they want. |
Really, they want this kind of publicity? |
I don't think that Maret cares. They will ride out the storm but in the end they will get their field. They will probably pull the same stunt 10 years from now again. I do hope that the DPR person who allowed this to happen loses his job. He doesn't deserve to keep it. Would also love some kind of investigation to rule out corruption. This is just such a bad deal for dc citizens that I keep thinking individuals must have personally benefited. Why else would the DPR approves such a lousy deal. |
The only way out of this that I see is to pressure Maret to relax the stranglehold they have over the field after school. That will require the kind of direct action that no media agency in DC would ignore. A multi-day sit-in of the field by Hardy students and Jelleff B&GC kids when Maret is supposed to be using it (ideally resulting in the cancellation of a “home” game or two) is probably the most efficient way to do that. |
Of course they don’t but that won’t make them change their arrangement. Their constituents - parents of students - want that field regardless of the public interest. The school would take a lot of internal heat if they back down now. The admins won’t risk their jobs and the big donations by offering any concessions. The only places pressure might be effective are the mayor, Council and DPR. Concentrate on those. Maret does not care. |
If DC had signed the deed over to them free and clear theyd still incur those costs. It's a giveaway, |
If “free” is $1 million plus rental fees, this is is correct. |
It’s about $111,111/yr which equals the tuition for about three students at the lowest tuition rate at Maret. So yes, a steal. Put that up against what the Jelleff Boys & Girls Club delivers on a fraction of the budget and without access to the field right outside their doors. Maret should be ashamed but they don’t have it in them. DPR should be investigated but they won’t be. I dare the mayor to talk about equity after this. She doesn’t seem to care either. |
But you all are assuming that DPR would maintain the field. Why do you think they would? If the field falls into disrepair, then they might just close it entirely. |
The DPR Director actually only has an “acting” title. I would think that might allow some room for revisiting the decision. |
DPR has over 100 other fields in varying states of repair, some are quite good, some not. But none have been closed due to disrepair. If anything DPR is investing pretty heavily in upkeep. Just around Jelleff, Palisades, Hearst and Hardy are getting redone this year, Fort Reno is going to be redone soon. |
I hope this comes up at his confirmation hearing. |
According to the Council website he was confirmed in June. |
I think Maret should suspect a very chilly reception at Jelleff now that this story has made their arrangement common knowledge. They should take care with those fancy cars. |
When and where is the protest? This city’s economic and political elite are hand-in-glove in stealing public resources from the 99%. This egregious corruption shouldn’t be normalized. We need media attention to get the FBI’s attention. |
