Why is there such a racial/ethnic disconnect with TJ Admissions?

there is no valid reason. the competition for admissions is out of control. Closely related to the immigration of asians and indians that is out of control. 800,000 H1Bs , not to mention the huge amounts of F1 student visas. Americans are taking work and school from their own children and giving it to asian immigrants.

But people don't respond unless it directly affects them. That is why we have allowed 10s of millions of illegal immigration for unskilled labor for all these years. Never affected us, now it is working up the chain. someday when doctors are outsourced to india for radiology, oncology and other specialties then medical doctors will care. Someday when lawyers are outsourced to india for shitlaw and other types of menial work, then lawyers will care.

Is it really better to allow hundreds of thousands of smart, hard working, asians immigrate and take our children's jobs, rather than have smart locals but not as hard working, get the opportunity.

I would rather we give these opportunities to us citizens and not the asian immigrants.

just how I feel, I would rather support other citizens first.

competition doesn't stop at borders. I don't think people should be shielded in the marketplace or harmed due to where they were born.

People do not have that choice - I support your claim if one could choose where to be born/get work permits for.

I am sure you 'compete' in the marketplace everyday by going to big box stores, grocery stores, amazon, i.e. any business that competes for you on price.

why do you support artificial barriers in order to protect as you say 'not as hard working' people? that is odd. The only people who can not be a hypocrite are those that truly live 'hyper local' - i.e. buy local, produce local, consume local.

I don't see what this has to do with the question. A magnet school that is publicly funded by taxpayers, but restricts access, is not an example of the free market in operation. You seem to confuse statism and elitism with a market economy - a very un-American attitude. I hope the people demand this school serve the community.

Sports teams? All-state band? School play?

Tons of stuff that schools do depends on talent/merit--why should ACADEMIC ability be different?

Your analogies suck. Four full years at a taxpayer-supported public high school is a bit different in scope and impact than getting a part in a school play.

Your response sucks. The point is they are all publicly funded school or school related programs. You react as if TJ doesn't provide any service. It educates 1,800+ students each year just like any other public high school and it does a good job. You think other high schools are not funded publicly? Get real.

You never provided any support for the silly argument that TJ was an example of a free market, so you lost the argument. You simply prefer that public resources be allocated in a way that you find meritorious.

Different poster. PP did not say TJ was an economic entity, the poster merely pointed out an example of you deriving a benefit from operation of a free market where free competition is allowed. It was illustrating the hypocrisy of deriving benefits from removal of artificial barriers (whether economic or educational) while complaining of similar condition for an educational institution. TJ does not restrict entry using artificial barriers except for applicants convincing the admissions committee using objective/subjective criteria that are applied to all applicants. There is a geographical restriction which is understandable since it is a N. VA regional public school. You are not advocating that we eliminate all public educational institutions that are deemed better than average are you? Make them all equal? That sounds more like communism. Very un-American attitude!

There's nothing particularly "American" about operating magnet high schools with restrictive admission policies that are mostly attended by first or second-generation Asian immigrants. Affording those children and all others a quality education would be considered an American value.

We are all immigrants or children/grandchildren of immigrants unless you are Native American. You know Native Americans are considered Asians. So, you have a problem with Asian Americans who are successful with restrictive admission policies. You are ignorant, illogical racist fool. Survival of the fittest, that's the American way! What are you gonna do? This country will be majority blacks/Hispanics/Asians etc. in 15 to 20 years anyway. Better get used to the diversity.

In America, there is a reason we do not have rote memorization as a way of life. It is not reasonable. This is not a dictatorship.

Second generation Asians are Americans. Racial discrimination is immoral and illegal.

Being envious is ok but do not push mediocrity as a solution, We already have a relatively poor public educational system and there is no need to degrade it further with a racist attitude. The ignorance and stereotype displayed above is part of the reason US is slipping in the world. In America, rote memorization may not be a way of life but ignorance is a way of life for most people. In America, we may not have a dictatorship but we have a severely dysfunctional government motivated by greed and questionable ethics. Without Asians, US would not rank in the middle of the educational performance of high schoolers in the world but rather towards the bottom. You cannot just have "Steve Jobs' of the world, you also need "Steve Wozniaks" of the world as well if you really wanted to stereotype. Besides, there will not be Steve Jobs without Steve Wozniak.

+1. In what dictator country, would an elite school be populated with first or second generation immigrants, pray tell!

If you think TJ is all about rote memorization, no wonder your kids are not in it.

amen to that. there is so much racism on this thread. people are trying to degrade Asian intelligence by making an assumption that rote memorization is solely involved. this is just an untrue stereotype that has no basis in reality. it's just a way for non-Asians to feel superior (e.g. when we white people are smart, we're really really smart because we have groundbreaking critical thinking skills, but those lowly 1st/2nd generation immigrants only memorize things day in and day out to take what's rightfully ours away from us). Untrue and insulting.

Why are you assuming that PP's DC are NOT in TJ? And that they are white? How is that NOT racism?

Do you really think the following was written by Asian or even black or Hispanic.? "In America, there is a reason we do not have rote memorization as a way of life. It is not reasonable. This is not a dictatorship." The whole statement is condescending, arrogant, misinformed, unintelligent and prejudicial. "Rote memorization, drone etc." are the typical line of attack used by whites to attack Asians outperforming whites. We don't know for a fact that it was posted by a white person but sure sounds like it. Don't try to throw around "racism" to hide/defend true racism.

Also, parents of TJ kids may be imperfect just like any other parents but highly unlikely to write such statement and post it.

Whites should just study harder to keep up with Asians. After all, all the rules were set up by the whites and Asians had virtually no input and they are just playing by the rules that were set up. You can't complaint if you set up the rules and you enforce the rules. Asians are certainly outperforming whites because they study and they are smart. Appreciate the fact that they are the brains and the professional work force behind the economy. The economy would crumble if all Asians went to China, India etc.

Actually whites appear to be more obsessed about AAP than Asians and prepping for the AAP tests. Not content with just prepping, they have to file appeals paying to get the WISC scores they want until the right price is paid and gaming the system so that they will have the bragging rights how their kiddies are in AAP and thus smarter than the gen ed kiddies. So, the prepping actually begins earlier for white kiddies than Asian kiddies since the most of the Asian prepping is for TJ (High school) not for tests given in 2nd grade. It's more insane to be prepping kids in 2nd grade than kids in middle school.

Don't try to attribute all the prepping and gaming to Asians only.

You study hard, work hard, play by the rules and achieve success as best as you can. That is the American way. Not moaning and groaning about other people's hard work and success!
