I’m not a politician - they are not “my” anything. The point is that the “choices available to them” (mentioned in the prior post) include not having kids they can’t feed. If they won’t listen to reason I’m not sure anything can be done about it. |
Let's be honest though. It's a developed world problem. The US is just the most developed country. The same pattern is increasingly happening in other countries. The issue comes down to status. Cooking for yourself is often seen as low status. And let's be even more honest. Processed food tastes good because it's loaded with salt, sugar and fats. It's easy and addicting. For some it's a simple luxury that makes them feel better in a world where the poor don't get many opportunities to do so. TV and the social media function in much the same way. That also explains why recent immigrant families don't fall into the trap of convenience foods. They know they are sacrificing from the start. That being said. There is no greater bang for the buck than a baked potato. Put some beans and cheese on it and it fulfills almost all our intake needs. It can even be made in a microwave. However it's very boring. The issue is that people use food as an escape from the drudgery. A baked potato with a can of beans costs less than $2 and is enough calories/protein to sustain at least an entire day but eating that is depressing and reminds people how crappy their life is. That's the problem. If sacrifice doesn't produce results then why should someone sacrifice. |

Hopefully the Democrats stop whining and moaning and actually pass the Republican budget now they realize there are actual consequences for their tantrum.
It’s ironic that we have Trump and republicans fighting like hell to save food stamps, social security, Obamacare, and other programs that democrats claimed they wanted to defund, and it’s democrats themselves that are working to abolish these programs. |
Lol. Nobody here is stupid enough to believe your bull. |
Try again. Trump is purposely blocking legal funds that can be used to pay for snap in November. SNAP has billions in carryover funds and some tariff revenues can be used like he already did for WIC. |
Two different posters. I’m the one who suggested making applesauce. Pretty much every has an internet enabled phone now to be at recipe ideas. I am not a republican. I did used to be poor and I somehow managed to feed myself without eating a bunch of processed crap. I didn’t have kids yet but I did know some families during that time and I saw a lot of stews over rice, buying cheap cuts of meat on sale and freezing them, frozen veggies etc. Also someone above is talking about a baked potato as a sad meal and I have to say, I make good money now and I love a good baked potato. I have one for lunch not infrequently. You can get a 10 pound bag of russet potatoes from Aldi for 5 |
The GOP?
When did they ever want to feed people? |
Amazing how according to democrats, everyone is poor and can't afford anything and yet everyone has a cell phone, a flat screen Tv and a happy meal.
We have subsidies for clothing, housing, transportation, edumacation, food, health care, and everything else under the sun. But please, continue to poor-mouth us. |
Crime will go up. Desperate people do desperate things. Stay safe. |
|
How infantile do you have to be not to set aside a small percentage of your income for emergencies. I'm not saying 50%. But 2% - 3% for a rainy day.
Enough of this nonsense. |
Absolutely. It’s going to be tough for all of those folks in Texas and Florida who will be most negatively affected. |
That money is better spent paying the salaries of the American Military and the brave ICE agents currently risking their lives protecting the men and women of our country and combating the insurgency of Antifa. |
What happen? We, as democrats, need to stand by our ideas and share our wealth with poor. Let each of us adopt 5 people to feed, house and support through these difficult times. Buy them a health insurance too. Let show MAGA that we really care about Americans. |
I know. How dare those antifascists protest fascism? |
SNAP has work requirements. Unless you're the parent and caretaker of a young child, or so disabled a doctor certifies that you can't work, the maximum amount of time an adult can get food stamps without working is 3 months within a 3 year period. These people mostly have jobs. |
