They’re responsible because the FDA shut Abbott down, a large manufacturer, with no forethought or plan that this action, even if it was the right thing to do, would cause large scale shortages as there are only a small number of baby formula manufacturers in the US. They should of had a contingency plan to avoid this mess.

The government needed a plan? It looks like Abbott needed to have a plan.

Why should Abbot have a plan when the FDA shut them down? There was clearly nobody over there thinking that if they did that it would cause a shortage and that they should do something to mitigate it.

The government didn't just shut Abbot down for no reason. They shut Abbot down because Abbott had contamination problems at their plant, and failed to deal with it - and babies who had their formula were getting sick and a couple of them died.

Abbott should have had a plan to keep their operations and their product clean and safe to begin with so that FDA wouldn't have had to step in and shut them down.

It's amazing how these right wing idiots think government regulators are doing things for no good reason. They demonize FDA, EPA and other regulators nonstop never acknowledging the rampant problems that corporations cause when left to their own devices.

The bacterial infections in the infants has not been tied to anything at the plant.

Abbott says there is no evidence to link its formulas to these illnesses. The FDA and the CDC have not disclosed any information that connects the illnesses and the plant. FDA officials said that the investigation was impeded by having only two of the four sickened babies' clinical samples.

The CDC analyzed clinical samples from two of the infants and did not find a genetic match to the environmental strains found at the plant. It also said the bacteria from the patient samples were not closely related to one another.

The FDA and Abbott tested environmental and product samples at the plant. They found five environmental samples containing Cronobacter sakazakii. The product samples tested negative.

Inspectors found a SLEW of violations all over the plant, they did find contamination, health and safety violations, lack of protocols, leaks et cetera. Even after they cleaned the plant, did a number of repairs, documented new protocols put in place and were given the green light to start back up they ended up having to shut back down because of roof leaks found when a thunderstorm passed through. How about some rainwater and bird poop in your baby's formula? The plant was a total mess.

Get real. Get a clue. It took Abbott a couple of months to bring the plant up to snuff. And even when they were given the green light to reopen a bunch more problems were immediately exposed and they had to close back down.

The reason there was a supply shortage is because of inadequately regulated capitalism leading to Abbott cornering a monopoly on the market. Exactly the kind of free market horsecrap Republicans love. There's absolutely no way to spin Republicans to any kind of moral high ground on any of this. This is their doing. Biden got stuck with cleaning up the Republicans' mess again as usual. I get you want to make everything not Biden’s fault. Truly I do. But the warnings from the investigators came in November 2021. Almost a year into Biden’s term. It was ignored until March 2022 when babies started dying.

Maybe if the administration was more focused on basic necessities, like food and formula, instead of free daycare for 1.5 years it would have been handled sooner.

1) mandate a living wage of $15/hr
2) Nationalize Health Care - instantly giving business employers 30 % of their earnings back ( earnings currently going to the Health Insurance mafia ) and allow American families to keep $1,500 more a MONTH in their pocket

3) mandatory 18 months fully paid maternity leave- if you truly want more women to choose to have a baby
4) heavily subsidized child care
5) heavily subsidized 4 year college education- Again- if you want more women to Choose to have children- make it economically viable to do so

In today's America- the fact is the working class and EVEN the middle Class Cannot Afford to have children

First of all it wasn't thousands stranded after the deadline, second, they had gotten warnings after warnings, request after request, offers of all kinds of help and support to get out for months prior to the deadline - and third, it's now an old story that's no longer relevant as every American who wanted to get out, did end up getting out, long ago. +100. IMO once the State Department issues a "do not travel" warning for a country you need to get out and not expect government help to come get you. MAGAs just need to find another thing to hang Biden on. Formula has been well stocked since June in my area. At one point I was taking a picture and posting it on a Formula Hunters page. Gas is $3.69 in the 23116. What else can Biden do? Will he ever get any credit?
