How far away do you need to be from DC to be safe from a nuclear attack?

WAIT. WHAT? How many episodes are in this last season? I figured there would only be about 10 or so since that’s about how many the last one had. I’m on episode 7 and was wondering how they were going to build up to end in just a few more episodes. Also, I was waiting to go further so I would have a build-up that I could binge. How many are there??

Regardless, I think the latter are more realistic than the former.

On the flip side, there are the ones completely and totally minimizing any threat by mocking the ones who are worried, even if they’re going a little overboard with their worry. These people, who are belittling the worriers calling them kooky, idiots, etc. are the worst ones yet. Ironically, they’re the ones who will die first because they have zero awareness. It’s similar to the people who said they weren’t scared of Covid and then end up in a hospital bed hooked up to a ventilator, eventually succumbing to it.

Realistically speaking, the threat does exist; but it’s important to understand the extent of the threat. Miscalculations are bad for everyone. No one should go into complete meltdown-panic mode, but it’s also unrealistic to completely brush everything off claiming there’s no threat whatsoever. Panic prevents you from thinking clearly, while denial impedes you from being sensible enough to take proper precautions. Being pragmatic is essential in any crisis type of situation. Being too far on either end of the spectrum is likely to get you killed. Level-headedness is where you want to be.

I think cyber attacks are more imminent than a nuclear attack- in general but even more specifically now. So weve slowly been accumulating things that we would need in any emergency. This would have been normal in FL for my family due to hurricanes but I got out of the habit when I moved up here.

1. Ive started keeping the bathtub filled after my kid takes a bath so we have water to flush the toilet. Hes the only one who uses that tub so it isnt a big deal.
2. We keep 1/2 pack of toilet or paper towels in reserve.
3. We do laundry consistently so there are always a weeks worth of clothes- especially clean underwear.
4. We keep on top of Rx refills
5. We have $400-600 in cash around the house at all times
6. My son has a dairy intolerance so Im keeping 2-3 shelf stable milks at all times. I donate them when they get to 6 weeks from expiration and get a whole new batch. I also have rice, peanut butter, jelly, beans, nuts, protein bars, protein drinks, cereal, etc. Its part of our normal intake so these arent extraneous but I plan to always have a weeks worth as a buffer.
7. Keep an extra propane tank for the gas grill
8. I purchased solar lamps- one with a USB- in the event of power outage we will charge them during the day and use them at night, if needed.
9. Need to purchase a years worth of contacts and extra glasses for myself since my FSA just renewed.
10. I fill my gas tank when it hits 1/2 tank.
11. I have got an extra bag of dog food.
12. I have a couple days worth of bottled water.
13. Keep fruits like citrus apple grapes etc. in rotation so if the power goes out they last for a few days.

You’re going to have to survive with a bunch of MAGA lunatics running around. Good luck.

The MAGA people I see around me are all decent, capable, law abiding family people. I don't agree with their politics but some of you have a very warped perspective of Trump voters in flyover.

+1 and I am not a Trumper

+1 and not a Trumper either, but people like the PP above NEED to brand people who support MAGA as lunatics so it can justify their own vicious hatefulness. Makes them feel good about themselves.

Nope. MAGA actions speak for themselves.

Your schtick is getting worn out.

I didn’t vote for Trump, but I will also acknowledge we didn’t have 22 page thread about a possible Russian nuclear attack during his presidency, either.

I have a serious case of buyer’s remorse with Joe Biden. I now look at the Trump-era fondly. I feel awkward admitting it, because I hate being wrong. But that’s how I feel.

What an ignorant perspective. You wouldn’t have a 22 page thread about a possible Russian nuclear attack because eventually if the same situation occurred under a dictator-wannabe like Trump, you wouldn’t have access to the information to even know if there were a risk. He would deny everything and lie to the people about what was going on, just like he did with Covid. He’d trample even more than he already did on our rights and censor any information that would be informative to the public, especially if it could be potential criticism of him. Anything like what’s being discussed here would be censored so we wouldn’t even be allowed to have the conversation. He wanted to repeal Section 230. He just attempted to hide evidence by shredding documents. When a reporter asked him one time what he discussed with Putin he said, “It’s none of your business what he and I talked about.” Everything would be a secret because it would make him look bad and he wouldn’t allow it. So the threat may still be there, you just wouldn’t know about it. Although, I supposed ignorance is bliss for people like you.

When a reporter asked Biden about is people should be concerned about nuclear war his entire answer was "no". Not exactly a lot of information for a big question like that.

What’s your point? At least he gave a direct answer. As for Trump, it very much is our business what he’s talking to Putin about. It would be one think if he had said it’s classified or can’t be discussed for security reasons or something along those lines but he flat out said it wasn’t the reporters business. That’s secrecy of the shady kind.

Nope. His first point is ridiculous, so I stopped. I have every right to plant tulips alongside my property line and it doesn’t matter if my neighbor doesn’t like it. Neighbors can do what they like and it’s none of my business. If I see my neighbor invite his friend Nato over and I bring over a shotgun, I’m the asshole.

We closed on our house near the Capitol on Sept. 10, 2001.

I panicked a little the next day.

We bought a seaside home as a bolthole right after 9/11. I’m not scared now, though. Just incredibly impressed by Zelensky and angry at dumbass Trump for holding up their $400M in aid.

We have one in the OBX. Russia’s newest bomb is launched from the sea with the express objective of causing a 1500’ wave. Most of the OBX would be gone. We spent a month there in 2020 and the supply chain issues were far worse than at our home in ROVA. Essentially one road in and out of there so it would be easy to be stranded. The medical care there is lacking too. The only hospital does not have a trauma center. Mad at Trump too for a lot of things. Don’t go to the beach to avoid the bomb.

With all due respect. Russia has no new bombs. Their technology is about 1995-2000. Their newer weapons are all old tech. They have no weapon to cause a 1500 foot wave. No one does except in Aquaman.

I hope you are authoritive. I like your respectful counter claim. I hope you are right! I found reference to it on a source while googling that seemed legit. Of course I can only find it now on an Indian news site but they call it the Poseiden and they were going to test it last summer in the Antarctic. The objective is to take out the Atlantic shelf and flood the east coast. I hope it's bull and I do think it has the feel of propaganda but I'd rather not FAFO. https://www.wionews.com/world/russias-tsunami-bomb-nuclear-missile-designed-to-hit-the-ocean-floor-376170

It also does not make me feel entirely secure that Ready.gov just updated the page on nuclear expolsions on 2-25-22. They wanted to remind everyone to wear a mask in the shelters. IIRC it used to have info involving duct tape and staying inside for two weeks. Now it's just 48 hours. https://www.ready.gov/nuclear-explosion

How do we get the warning? Everyone’s phones start buzzing like amber alert?

GMAFB. You are blaming Biden for this?

“I voted for Biden but…” Sure you did. Liar.

NP. Fact remains we didn't have a potential nuclear war looming over us when Trump was president. He took a strong stance against Putin and put sanctions on the pipeline being built between Russia and Europe and warned of Europeans becoming too energy dependent on Russia. He called out NATO for taking advantage of the US, which NATO was doing. There are many, many, many things I disagree with Donald Trump but much of his foreign policy was actually on target. Despite all this, Trump got pilloried in the presses. But had the Germans and other nations not been so short sighted and shut down their nuclear plants in exchange for becoming energy dependent on Russia, had all the NATO countries lived up to their military spending obligations, Putin wouldn't be thinking the West is weak and divided and invading Ukraine. It's not to Joe Biden's credit that he removed the sanctions Trump put on the Russian pipeline. Nor do I think it was wise to have all the US embassies fly BLM and rainbow flags in despotic regions. In case you hadn't noticed, both Russia and China have been increasingly dismissive and aggressive since Biden took office and it's not hard to see why they may be thinking the US is weak.

The goal for each NATO country to reach 2% of their GDP was for 2024. Considering 2024 hasn’t yet happened, you can’t really say they didn’t live up to their obligations. Also, Trump started to dismantle NATO and ruin our relationships with our allies. If one wants to make baseless claims like you are, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to make the excuse that the members who had yet to project the 2% goal weren’t motivated to do so because they were worried about the state of NATO’s future due to Trump’s destructible behavior. He said multiple times he’d like to pull out of NATO. When someone asked him if he would adhere to Article 5, undoubtedly the most important aspect of NATO, if an ally was attacked, he responded, “That’s a good question isn’t it? I don’t know, it’s something I need to consider. The fact that he even answered the question in that manner proves he doesn’t know $hit about foreign policy, or any policy really, at all whatsoever. It would render NATO useless. And for anything to work, aside from signed contracts, treaties, agreements, etc. one also needs to adhere to the honor code. We already know Trump doesn’t give a crap about the rule of law, so acting like he would follow any sort of honor code is a flipping joke. Would you support pulling out of NATO?? Because that’s seemingly what you’re implying.

Further, Putin thinks the West is weak and divided because he helped to make it to at way. You’re living in la-la land if you think this is just an opportunity born out of convenience rather than a deliberate action on Putin’s part. Also, this “weakness” talk everyone keeps spewing is getting tiring. If you think Trump showed any strength, well…HAHAHAHAHA. You may be dumber than he is! He threw a temper tantrum over losing an election and TO THIS DAY, he is still crying about it. In fact, the other day on Fox he told Laura Ingraham that the reason for the Russia-Ukraine crisis is because of “the rigged election”. He refused to go to Biden’s inauguration. Anytime he was criticized it was “fake news”. The press was “constantly out to get him” according to him because he couldn’t handle anything less than groveling and praise, let alone constructive criticism. He fired anyone in his administration who wasn’t “loyal” enough in his eyes. He’s poisoned the Republican Party and continues to do so anytime someone in the party finds a spine and decides rightfully to defend the constitution instead of the orange blob of flubber with a bad hairdo. He does all of this because HE.IS.WEAK. Make no mistake, there’s not a single strength that trump possesses.

Is this how people worried during “Cold War”? I was a child back then, growing up in Soviet Union (not Russian, they invaded my country). I don’t think people over there worried at all, but I guess it was because they had no idea.

It was for me. Growing up in the States in the 70s/80s, this was always in the back of my mind.

Same for me (born in 78). I’ve been really anxious since the invasion began.

We’ve booked it for 21 days… I guess if there’s an attack it won’t matter at that point and we’ll just stay there. There’s not much around it, and it’s miles and miles from anywhere that would seem even remotely important. Closest “city” is Roanoke, and that’s almost 45 miles away. That seems like the best we can do on short notice. We both WFH and are familiar enough with home schooling thanks to the pandemic that I think the kids will be ok for a while. They’re too young to really understand this, so as long as they’ve got stuff to keep them occupied I think they’ll manage ok….. I never believed we’d be in a mess like this a year ago. It’s just inconceivable. I just can’t even fathom it.

Covington is not that far from the DIA facility in Charlottesville.

An Air BNB in mountains? That makes no sense. Your are watching the refugees feeling Kiev with schadenfreude. If you are so concerned, why not flee to some undergorund bunker in Wyoming or somehting.
