Western High School Boundary Map options (A/B/C/D)

They should fix elementary centers outside of the high school pyramids. It’s so confusing. Especially as they move to all middle schools having AAP.

Absolutely #1 but I prefer Skyview in general because it's much closer to my home. Literally the only people I've heard say they want to switch to Franklin are people who have kids in AAP and whose kids would end up at Carson anyway. They are incredibly selfish.
'

The RIO sports crew will want #2 for sure. They've already been pushing for it. Some of their kids are in AAP, some not. They see switching to Franklin as the way to stay at Oakton. Plus there will be AAP at all middle schools in a few years anyway, so the AAP kids that you all assume make Carson so amazing would be at Franklin anyway.

I'm the person you're responding to and my kids are NOT AAP. We have had a great experience at Carson and would be sad to be sent over to Franklin, which we haven't heard the greatest things about.

I think Franklin will become an AAP center soon.

I think this will happen literally next school year. In Kyle McDaniel's email about yesterday's school board meeting, he said they determined that FCPS will implement AAP in middle school in four phases starting with the coming school year. They also talked about how there are three different implementations of AAP in middle schools - AAP centers, non-centers that have separate AAP classes, and schools that have AAP kids but not separate AAP classes. I would guess that Phase I would be turning that first set of schools that already have separate AAP classes into centers, meaning Navy/Oak Hill/Waples kids would get kicked out of Carson and sent back to Franklin.

Swap Navy and Waples AAP for all Oak Hill students?

If they are going to do that they also need to fix the fact that the Waples AAP center is Hunters Woods, not even in the Franklin pyramid.
If Crossfield stays at Carson then they need to go to Skyview. Their AAP center should be another school in that pyramid. If they stay at Oakton then they need to go to Franklin, and FCPS needs to find an in-pyramid solution for Waples Mill kids during grades 3-6.

Why doesn't Waples go to Navy for AAP, it's so much closer?

I asked that question for 4 straight years. At this point it doesn't matter to me anymore, but someone needs to consider it. Crossfield goes to the Navy center, but my kid had to ride the bus 1 hour each way (including all the stops), right past Crossfield, for AAP at Hunters Woods.

I swear Crossfield used to go to Hunters Woods for AAP. Is that true or am I just making that up?

Yes, that must be hard for Waples kids to leave their friends for three years to go to HW, then leave their new friends to go to Carson while friends go to Hughes. Wouldn't it make more sense for Fox Mill to go to HW because they'll eventually end up in High School with those kids? Where does Fox Mill go for AAP? Oak Hill? It's so messed up!

I don't know about Crossfield, but I do remember that Oak Hill had kids go there for GT. I don't think it was ever AAP--just like Carson AAP was initially GT.
It's not the same thing, no matter what AAP parents claim.

So that's the point. Would make more sense for Waples Mill to go to Navy, Crossfield to go to Oak Hill, and Fox Mill to go to Hunters Woods.

100% then Waples + Navy kids can stay together and feed to Franklin-Oakton while Crossfield and Oak Hill kids can stay together and feed to Carson-Skyview. Fox Mill kids would go to a different middle school but at least they'd end up in HS with HW kids.

I taught at Hunters Woods about 15 years ago. My classes consisted of students from Hunters Woods, Navy, Waples Mill, and Crossfield. Because the AAP center was overcrowded, Navy got designated as a center (I believe around 2013), and Crossfield got transferred there while Waples stayed at Hunters Woods.

The only issue with this is about 1/3 of the Fox Mill kids don't live in Fox Mill but across Fairfax County Parkway. Oak Hill ES is less than 2 miles from neighborhoods like Bradley Farm when taking McLearen. Though most students stay at Fox Mill rather than transfer to Oak Hill for AAP, so I guess it doesn't matter much.

Crossfield is quite close to Hunters Woods and should have been the school to remain at Hunters Woods for AAP. I think they were the school that got moved to Navy because of numbers (Waples and Navy always had significantly more eligible students, and I don't think Navy could accommodate Waples.).

Most of Crossfield is in Franklin Farm. Oak Hill already has the southern part of Franklin Farm in its boundary.
In fact, when Oak Hill was built--before Chantilly Highlands was built out--Franklin Farm kids attended Oak Hill. That was before 286 was completed in that area.

What is the issue here? People keep saying where kids from various ES go to MS...what's the issue?

The issue is that the school board should take the opening of the new high school as an opportunity to fix several instances of elementary schools splitting to the "wrong" middle school that won't line up with their high school. Since they have also announced plans to make every middle school an AAP center then they can also use this opportunity to fix the issues of kids going to AAP elementary centers that don't make sense, like Waples Mill going outside their pyramid to Hunters Woods, when they won't see any of those other kids again if Franklin becomes their center.

The capacities of middle schools often don’t align with the capacities of the nearest high schools and FCPS is too stupid to do anything about, so you end up with split feeders or schools that are well above or below capacity. They are absolute idiots when it comes to managing their physical assets.

A huge part of the problem is that the BOCS does not have strategy to align the comprehensive plan and zoning decisions with school enrollment capacity. The planning board and staff/BOCS act like their decisions are made in a vacuum without regard for school impacts.
