Agreed.

Do you think Brabrand or this School Board spends one minute worrying about whether the changes they are making water down FCPS? It’s all about the superficial appearance of equity and nothing else.

There are schools that actually prep kids so much they are called prep schools? Wow.

TJ is a college prep. Every FCPS HS claims to be a college prep

some people have problem if Curie is TJ HS prep but no problem if TJ is a college prep (for ivys).

I am not sure this has been discussed before or not. The current reform is like picking the best students in the lower ranked high school and transferring them to the best high schools. TJ is just a buffer. Over time, the better high school will get better, the bottom tiered hHS will get worse.

As time progresses, the only foreseeable reform to correct this will be bus in bus out or rezone

TJ doesn't cost $4,000 per year. Not comparable.

English and foreign language courses at TJ are very rigorous and intense. My son used to joke that TJ should be named Thomas Jefferson High School for Literature and Foreign Language.

School admin has been trying to trim world languages for some time now. For example, Japanese was on the cutting block 2 years ago, only to get a reprieve when students protested.

The sole Japanese teacher just left. He was instrumental in many exchange programs.

In the last few months, 1 Russian, 1 German and 2 Spanish teachers also departed.

With an expanded freshman class coming in, not sure what the school's plans are.

Japanese disappeared because of lack of interest among the students. Granted, the new freshmen class has not signed up for classes yet, but this is sort of a canary in the coal mine of what happens at TJ sometimes.

For a few years, TJ was in danger of losing its fairly popular extracurricular theatre program because of a lack of student interest in curricular classes - students had gone away from arts electives in order to optimize their STEM profile. For a couple of years, TJ didn't have a dedicated theatre teacher and the job fell to an English teacher who is a great guy but far better suited to teach English. The department suffered as a result and nearly went away. Fortunately, Dr. B hired an absolute superstar (Mr. Reid) to run the department a few years ago and he's had things on a great track ever since with a lot of enthusiasm.

TJ needs to remain a full-service high school, and in order to do so they have to bring in kids with diverse interests above and beyond just STEM.

Does FCPS really have thousands of kids taking geometry by 8th grade? I was under the impression that things are more advanced in LCPS by middle school, with some of the schools having the majority take algebra by 7th grade. I don't think LCPS has enough 8th grade kids in geometry to fill a TJ class.

I thought prepping was bad.

When you go for a job interview, do you prep or not
Why prep is bad?

TJ costs approx. 500,000.00 for prep by having the labs and extra programs.

They easily have over 1000 kids per grade level taking Algebra before 8th grade.

Heck, there are probably close to 100 kids taking Algebra II or higher in 8th. My AAP center, alone, sends about 10 kids per year to Algebra in 6th grade. Other AAP centers do the same. Many TJ motivated kids not on this track take Algebra I in 7th, Geometry in the summer after 7th, and then Algebra II in 8th.

Not to the families. It seems like you keep trying to make a point - if you could make it clearly, concisely, and understandably, that would be a great help.

Hmm. Someone in this forum thought I was making things up when I said most kids take algebra by 7th grade in Loudoun. I got the impression the percentage is much lower in Fairfax.
