I don't think LCPS has enough 8th grade kids in geometry to fill a TJ class.

They easily have over 1000 kids per grade level taking Algebra before 8th grade.

Hmm. Someone in this forum thought I was making things up when I said most kids take algebra by 7th grade in Loudoun. I got the impression the percentage is much lower in Fairfax.

Most kids in LCPS take Algebra by 7th, meaning over 50% do? I find that hard to believe.

FCPS has about 14,500 kids per grade at the middle school level. FCPS would only need 6.9% of the 7th graders to take Algebra to reach 1000 students.

Fake news?

I went to the Curie thing and 90 people were accepted and 130 (at least) waitlisted. Usually they got over a 100 students in previous years so this is a huge decrease and most students are from feeder schools so it was expected anyways.

It is still great with no test !! 20% of class is from Curie Curie Curie ..

The reason so many students get in from Curie is not because of their test prep but because a lot of students that go to Curie are willing to put in hard work and effort. Probably over 300 people went there this year but not everyone will get in.

Everyone saying that Curie got 90 (!!!!) kids in this year, what is the source? Just a statement at the open house or was there anything more substantial? I have not seen a list similar to past years, so how do we know they are telling the truth?

It probably isn't true for LCPS as a whole, but is true for a few of the middle schools. I have heard 80% at Stone Hill, but suspect this may be parents are just not aware of the kids who aren't in. I am excluding a sizable number of kids who take geometry in summer after 7th grade.

I see the disparity is with the number of kids. LCPS has 17 middle schools, and maybe 300-400 per grade in the biggest schools.

TJHSST is supposed to be a public school.

If getting into TJ essentially requires $$$$ to pay for Curie classes, that is troublesome. A gifted child could work their tail off in FCPS and never have a prayer of competing with a less-gifted child whose parents had them in Curie classes. The reforms were supposed to reduce or even eliminate this disparity.

I’m beginning to suspect that FCPS never really cared about improving access, it was all about optics.

Vast majority of TJ kids had no prep classes including my kid. Don’t believe the fake news that all TJ kids attended prep classes.

Previously Curie listed the students who got in that attended their classes and it was around 30% of the incoming class.

Nope. I really wish that it was. They published on their FB page all of the first and last names of the TJ/AOS/AET Curie admits for the classes of 2024, 2025 and 2026. They really got almost 30% of the class of 2024.

They never cared about prep. The goal was to get in more black and brown kids. They attacked the test prep to attack the idea that the system was merit based. Getting the per school quota was the key item. They might add in maximum per school quotas as well, depending on how much they have an additional goal of reducing Asian numbers.

No, they got the per school minimum quota they wanted. Attacking test prep was just a convenient way to argue that the original system was not merit based.
They achieved their goal of getting more black and brown kids in. If they have the additional goal of holding down the number of Asians, then they will add a per school maximum as well and take all those spots away from Rachel Carson and Longfellow.

So I need to send my kid to Curie if I want them to get into TJ under this new system too. Got it.

Or move to a weaker school.

Why still bother going to TJ? Starting this year, TJ is not the same school as before. FCPS didn’t admit the real top 1.5% top students from middle schools and they just gave offers to bunch of ordinary students as their so-called 1.5% students. All real top 1.5% top students from our middle school were waitlisted. The admission committee sucks and I doubt they did it on purpose.

There are schools that actually prep kids so much they are called prep schools? Wow.

TJ is a college prep. Every FCPS HS claims to be a college prep
