Hm, I took his "offer" as a threat, since life is even more brutal for handmaids in DC.

And if he really wanted to help her, he'd ensure she got another posting in Boston.

Me too. There was some chatter between Lydia and Stabler in the background about veils etc. I assume DC = mouth staple.

I would like to see Fred on the wall. He lacks loyalty to any person or cause other than himself. Total narcissist. It should now be clear to Commander Lawrence that Fred is out to get him and take him down. So now Cmdr Lawrence needs to man up and show Fred who’s really in charge. Pit Fred on the wall and the message will be clear to not f^ck with command. Put Serena on the wall too, to reinforce that point.

Fred is a traitor and needs to go down.

I took Fred's offer as part of his sexual obsession with June - more like I'll keep you in DC as the most F-ed up kind of mistress.

This episode had a line from Aunt Lydia about how the mouth rings are voluntary that felt like clean up, but all it did was remind me of how ridiculous the mouth rings are. There are so many more functional ways to deal with a voluntary vow of silence. I mean they could make the rings open and close for eating/vomiting. Just as gross, easily adjusted for torture, but much much more practical for people you are trying to keep alive/pregnant.

I agree with the impracticality, but they are so horrific to look at, I actually like them as a device for conveying the brutality of the regime. I'm willing to suspend disbelief on this.

Waterford and everyone else knows June gets to live. She’s the mother of the baby, with fellow handmaid friends in the outside, she can’t accidentally die in a traffic accident and America/UN be okay with it

But a big theme of this season imo is that America is losing and the rest of the world has to deal with Gilead because if it’s military might.

My spin, It would be too hard for me to believe they would kill June. They need her for propaganda much more than they need her to keep her in line. If anything, it’s because of June and her daughter that Gillead is gaining so much momentum, Fred is using this to advance his career and the decisions he’s made are working in favor of Gillead. They can’t dispose of the handmaid, otherwise the world wouldn’t care as much and Fred would lose his five minutes of fame amounts the Gillead DC elite.

This could be true, but news stories like this don't remain relevant or interesting forever. I would think there's a clock ticking on how long the Nichole story protects June from harm.

Also, Gilead could threaten Hannah to keep June in line if they wanted.

I thought that was Aunt Lydia and the "handmaids are respected job" thing. She wasn't happy about any of the mouth stuff when they were in DC. Part of her "belief" is that they are doing this for God, and God wouldn't want them treated barbarically. They are supposed to be treated "well" (which is why they pretend its not rape, either). (I don't know how she gets her head around the torture part. I guess that just happens to individual handmaids, and usually because they threaten the life of a baby.)

One prediction, Commander Lawrence will be more powerful than ever because of the power vacuum.
