Whether this young teen "invented" something or "constructed" it, or was just "tinkering around" is not relevant. He wasn't entering a Science Fair competition for Pete's sake.
He obviously likes to goof around with electronics. He did something to make a useful device -- an alarm clock is what I believe his father said. he said he uses this to wake up in the morning. Is he a "boy genius"? as described by some media accounts? Probably not. But he didn't start this. And he never said he was any kind of genius. He's wasn't looking for media attention. he was just building something at home -- whether from a kit, or by taking apart an exiting clock for its components and rearranging and reassembling them... that's tinkering, that's how you learn how to build stuff. he wasn't entering it into some contest, he was just screwing around, and brought it in to school because he wanted to show it to his teachers. "Look what I made!" Is it so hard to believe that kids want to show their teachers some outside work that they did? Look at this poem I wrote, this drawing I did, this project I've been working on. This thing I put together on my own time for no reason other than I was just screwing around with some electronics. Is that so hard to believe? |
People's reactions to his case (invitations to visit, intern etc) aren't so much because they think he is a genius. It is a reaction to the way he was treated. |
The "Radio Shack Micronta Alarm Clock" story sounds plausible but has one issue - that particular clock that they showed runs off of wall AC power. Ahmed's was self-contained and battery powered.
But either way, building a digital alarm clock with LED display is not all that hard these days, given all of the hobbyist electronic components out there. Not necessarily "genius" or "invention" but still very cool that this kid was tinkering around with it. |
The Radio Shack clock had a backup battery. |
Have you ever heard of transference? I am suggesting that the poster who suspects the worst of Ahmed's family may feel that way because, in that family's place, the poster would behave deceptively. Also, you may be conducting your own transference by suggesting that I need to get high. Perhaps that reflects your own situation more than mine? |
Insulting and arresting a kid because wrong think he might be s terrorist is a sure-fire, fast-track way of sending him down that path. Not as effective as having a drone fire a missle at his village but about as the best we can do here in the Good Ole USofA. |
Yes, heard of transference. No-"suspect the worst" based on reading, listening, watching and learning about as many FACTS about this case as possible, then made a conclusion based on the information gathered. Now there may be more info out there not disclosed or that we (the public) are not privy to, so that conclusion can change and may even do a complete 360.... and possibly, though I have never smoked Marijuana, this discussion (and lots of stuff on DCUM in general) makes me wonder if it may be a good idea! |
In other news-a poor kid in Saudi Arabia is about to be crucified (literally) and beheaded just because he disagrees with his government. Not such a popular thread-I suspect no one cares as he has not "invented" a clock or anything even remotely resembling one. Our priorities are very very screwed up! |
I think it's projection and denial. PP is projecting his own dishonesty on Ahmed and will deny he would think of doing such a thing. |
Let's launch an immediate invasion and depose the House of Saud. That should fix everything. |
Toy guns? A kid was suspended for throwing an imaginary grenade in an imaginary box full of imaginary bad guys. You don't HAVE to exploit that - it speaks for itself...along with pop-tart guns and tiny little LEGO guns. |
Somehow I don't recall pop tart kid being arrested. And unless you support the arrest of pop tart kid, it has no bearing on whether this boy and his clock should receive that kind of treatment. The whole "where's the outrage" thing is a useless point. There was plenty of outrage but it's more a matter for the PTA than a political board. |
You don't recall cops being involved in some of these ridiculous incidents? Do a bit of searching. And for kids who are little - elementary age!! |
Interesting Bill Maher video with a panel. Apparently the kid took this clock to six different teachers before the sh*t hit the fan?

Actually, Matthews made some good points. |
