He's wasn't looking for media attention.   he was just building something at home -- whether from a kit, or by taking apart an exiting clock for its components and rearranging and reassembling them... that's tinkering, that's how you learn how to build stuff.   he wasn't entering it into some contest, he was just screwing around, and brought it in to school because he wanted to show it to his teachers.   "Look what I made!"  Is it so hard to believe that kids want to show their teachers some outside work that they did?  Look at this poem I wrote, this drawing I did, this project I've been working on.   This thing I put together on my own time for no reason other than I was just screwing around with some electronics. Is that so hard to believe?[/quote]
