Fed Government Shutdown 2025: non-political thread

Businesses are insulated due to the rise of telework. Decision-makers are personally unaffected; they bypass disruptions like ATC outages by flying private.
This will be essentially a "stealth layoff" designed to "right-size" the government. Withholding pay places employees under financial siege, forcing first those with options, and then the most desperate, to resign.

Meh, most of us have nowhere else to go at this point,

I think this is the reason they want to drag this out. Terrify us and get more attrition.

A week into this Trump/Johnson shutdown, I realize that I did not realize how exhausted I am. Mentally. Physically. Not looking for sympathy.
Truly saddened by the assault on our democratic system of governance, imperfect as it is, and the enormity of the resulting harm.

I am too. I am angry at the left because their extreme policies have led the country to vote for Trump.

This is what happens when the left took the country too far left, where merely referring to another person by the wrong pronoun would be treated as a violent assault.

So a few college kids insisting on using pronouns, equates to the entire Democratic Party? You need to work on your critical thinking skills.

Just admit you were looking for an excuse to let your misogyny & racism run free. You got it now!

Different poster here, but you are being disingenuous. Putting your pronouns in your email signature line became a widely adopted corporate practice, and if someone objected, they were considered transphobic.

But that never happened. It's like being angry at your spouse because you dreamed about them cheating - it's entirely in your head.

That isn't entirely true. There was a push for compelled speech that started in 2020 with BLM and was being further extended with the expectation of using correct pronouns

Is it just that there's so much else going on? I feel very forgotten.

Yes, agree. And usually I don’t feel concerned about being furloughed but this time around I do think it’s a sign that my agency doesn’t value me which stings. I’m one of the few in a leadership position in my office who is furloughed and while normally my position is categorized as furloughed I feel like they could have made me excepted part time and chose not to since the furloughed va excepted is taking on a whole new meaning this time. So this feels very different and yes, in past shutdowns there would be specials for Feds or I remember in 2013, we could go to the movies for free. Feds feel forgotten right now. No one cares the govt has shut down perhaps bc people have lost all faith in government and have no respect for civil servants.

If you are excepted, are you working full days? Are you taking the unpaid lunch? I am still working 8.5 hour days in the office, I think I may be doing it wrong.

This opinion piece isn’t about pronouns in email signatures. I’ve never put my pronouns in my email signature and it was never an issue. I’ve never heard any complaints about pronouns and email signatures until Trump issued a mandate about email signatures.

I guess concerns about free speech stopped in January.

My agency pressured employees to include their pronouns in email signatures. I included my pronouns because I was afraid about the potential consequences for not complying. We were also required to use gender neutral language and attend countless trainings to “educate” us about gender, equity, and other woke concepts. I complied, but I took a stand at the ballot box and voted for Trump. While I’m not entirely fond of Trump’s policies, I prefer him over the alternative.

I live in a very blue area and no one I know was ever forced to put their pronouns in a signature line. I’ve seen people do it, but they were in the minority, and the vast majority of people whose gender identity is apparent did not add pronouns.

If anything, the more widespread reaction is people being fired for not *removing* them from signature lines (such as fed employees). There is definitely one party that wants to control what people do.

What is wrong with you? What could you possibly prefer over a qualified human being? Trump is worthless he is literally worthless. Stephen Miller is calling the shots. Do you not understand THE CONSTITUTION OF THE US? Do you not understand what it means to be an American?

This thread was not supposed to be political, there was no way I was letting you put your Trump stupidity here.

Lol. Fair point. Seems pretty quiet now that the new admin is stomping all over free speech too.

Yes, there is so much political insanity the shutdown is getting buried. Very different.

There are a lot more people working this time too. I met up with a couple friends over the weekend, one is exempt who wasn't in the past and one is excepted, I'm the only one whose day to day life is different.

It feels different, but even the working people aren’t getting paid, so at some point it will boil over.

I'm the PP you're responding to, my friends I was mentioning are exempt (which means they are getting paid because their jobs are funded by application fees, basically, not appropriations). They are getting paid and basically working as normal. I'm glad for them.

Sucks for the folks who are excepted and working without pay though. They definitely have it worst.

That link is way off topic. But here's an anecdote: I am a woo-woo lefty with family members who use non-standard pronouns and I have never put my pronouns in my email signature. Not once, not with any employer. My agency issued a standard template with space for that, and I simply removed the line for pronouns. No one said a thing. I have been promoted a couple times since then. It's fine.

Imagine throwing a complete tantrum over "forced speech" instead of simply not doing the thing you didn't want to do.

NO they were considered petty.

The new admin asked for new signature lines and nobody made a big deal over it we just changed the signature line, you didn't even hear about it... because one group of people are constantly over reacting to petty little things.
