I don't think they can come to the negotiating table and "save face". Perhaps they will dig deeper. |

I was in downtown DC Monday and Tuesday for work. I drove in both days in rush hour both ways. There was tons and tons of people at work.
Do Feds make much difference anymore to DC? Pre Covid and pre-remote WFH DC would be a ghost town if Feds were on Furlough. Last two days ever restaurant, hotel, coffeeshop was full. Kinda weird. |
Many feds have not been furloughed and are currently working without pay. Some agencies have more furloughed employees than others, but it's something like 50% across the federal government are still working. |
Must have been some other event. Feds are obviously not filling the hotels, and usually are not in restaurants and coffee shops. Feds tend to brown-bag it; most of us have short lunch breaks and long commutes so we are not hanging out in restaurants during the day. (That is why trying to revitalize any area with RTO or moving a federal office there is doomed to failure.) But, more than half of all feds are commuting to work (unpaid) so it makes sense your commute was affected. |
About 670,000 federal employees are furloughed, while roughly 730,000 continue to work without pay. |
I thought the senate was out next week. Would they stay to work out a deal? |
| If the Dems were smart they’d vote yes for the CR today. That get everyone back to work. Until 11/21 when the current CR on the table expires. It releases the back pay and I’d assume it forced the House back into session to start working on another budget. |
Because many Feds are working without pay. Are you this dumb IRL? |
But ACA open enrollment already started. They want to negotiate those subsidies now, not in 2 weeks. |
I read it's more like 75% (including military)! Also, in previous shutdowns I feel like there were more stop work orders for contractors and cooperators, but I don't have numbers. |
| Rumor has it that republicans are considering a two year extension of enhanced aca subsidies. Could be an end in sight. |
It may be too little too late, but it's not nothing, so I'd take it. |
yet packing bars, restaurants and nightclubs, sporting events. I am going in tonight for a dinner meeting by convention center and hard to get a spot. |
why not just split the difference on it and open tommorrow?. |
I'm the PP you quoted and a contractor -- there were definitely more stop work orders in previous shutdowns. We haven't gotten nearly as many this time. This one is really strange and unpredictable in that regard. Also, wow - 75%! |
