wow. so folks would prefer to tear down democracy because they felt judged for using the wrong pronoun?! Fragile, much?
It happened to me. I used the wrong pronoun a couple times by accident. I was corrected. it was annoying. but I understood. people just want to feel respected and valued. I still make mistakes sometimes, but effort goes a long way. |
I actually don’t think this is true. If it were, far more people would be furloughed. |
I know another Fed like you. She was RIFed. Now she isn’t so sure about her choices. She is seething. |
So a few college kids insisting on using pronouns, equates to the entire Democratic Party? You need to work on your critical thinking skills. Just admit you were looking for an excuse to let your misogyny & racism run free. You got it now! |

Folks, this is the non-political thread.
Anyone in IRS want to comment on this story about hald of IRS being furloughed? https://www.cnn.com/2025/10/09/politics/irs-furloughs-government-shutdown |
| I don’t think this is getting resolved next week. Putting my bet on the end of October maybe even early November. Dems have gained momentum and are holding. Trump is completely disinterested in the shutdown. He’s heading to the Middle East and thune and Johnson are stuck without him. Also did I hear correct the House is extending their recess for another week plus the senate was supposed to be off next week too. |
| Does anyone else feel like the shutdown isn't being covered as much as last time? I feel like I'm in this surreal state where my day to day is completely different but no one is talking about it. It's not on the Post or the New York Times most days, maybe just one sub story. Is it just that there's so much else going on? I feel very forgotten. |
| We are forgotten. The only hope of this ending soon is massive flight disruptions. |
Yes, there is so much political insanity the shutdown is getting buried. Very different. There are a lot more people working this time too. I met up with a couple friends over the weekend, one is exempt who wasn't in the past and one is excepted, I'm the only one whose day to day life is different. |
Oh my gosh you’re on to them! Furloughed feds orchestrated this whole shutdown to get some paid vaycay time. 🙄 |
But but but … they watched a political ad that said Kamala is for the they/thems so this must be true! Dear leader would never lie to us. |
Also, we already refer to people based on personal preference. If I had a coworker who went by Philip it would be rude to call them Phil, especially if they asked me not to. So how hard is it to call someone a different pronoun? It literally requires changing a syllable. I’m convinced many republicans don’t even understand the parts of speech because they get SO upset at “having to use pronouns” not realizing that we all have pronouns! And they/them has always been a gender neutral term. E.g. If someone tells me the pizza delivery person is at the door and I say “okay make sure to tip *them*,” that is grammatically correct. But instead of showing a modicum of respect to people who are different, MAGA would rather burn down the whole country because how dare anyone tell them what to do. They’d rather just allow an authoritarian takeover instead! |
Businesses are insulated due to the rise of telework. Decision-makers are personally unaffected; they bypass disruptions like ATC outages by flying private. This will be essentially a "stealth layoff" designed to "right-size" the government. Withholding pay places employees under financial siege, forcing first those with options, and then the most desperate, to resign. |
Yep. Girls in my DD's class have changed their names (sometimes multiple times) to a middle name or a nickname. If I forget, they correct me and I just say "oops, I meant Laura, sorry." A couple of them use they/them pronouns and it's handled the same way. No one is shunning me for an honest error. I find that the people who are really upset about pronouns and DEI are highly anxious people who worry they are being judged in every interaction. It's a serious wellness problem that affects their QOL. |
It feels different, but even the working people aren’t getting paid, so at some point it will boil over. |
