It is on my reading pile but I am slogging through Didion first.

I believe it. They each have a song titled Happiness, and it is about the other. In hers, she sings, "I guess it's the price I pay for SEVEN years in heaven." This is on the evermore album, released in 2020. Who knows when this particular song was written, but it means that she & Matty were meeting up or at the very least exchanging love signals since 2013, or earlier.

lol. Ya'll are insane. If they knew each other that long why didn't they publicly date? 1975 band peaked in 2012-2016, long before she was dating Joe (2016 to 2023).

Their story reads like a modern version of it.
Matty is sarcastic, quick witted, arrogant + has a British sense of humor, all of which get him in trouble sometimes. He has a big ego and has mentioned in interviews that dating Taylor Swift would be emasculating for him. I am sure they played cat and mouse with each other for years, too proud to admit their true feelings, esp since they were both in their 20s and immature. But the love was there based on all the songs they wrote for each other.

Separately, he used to do drugs. He is a serial dater. He is wild and uninhibited on stage. So they were both aware that he would be detrimental for her brand and good girl image. She has alluded to that in her lyrics, for example:

Don’t Blame Me:
“And baby, for you, I would *fall from grace*
Just to touch your face.
They’d say, "She's gone too far this time."

Dancing With Our Hands Tied:
“I, I loved you in spite of
Deep fears that the world would divide us.”

Illicit Affairs:
“And you know damn well
*For you, I would ruin myself*
A million little times.”

But Daddy I Love Him:
“I'll tell you something right now
I'd rather *burn my whole life down*
Than listen to one more second of all this griping and moaning
I'll tell you something about my good name
It's mine alone *to disgrace*.”

I believe Matty loved her and knew how much her fame and career mean to her, so when the public went nuts over their relationship in 2023, he left to save them both. “How dare you think it’s romantic, leaving me safe and stranded” and
“Told me I'm better off
But I'm not
I’m not
I'm not.” 💔

Her "happiness" song is about Joe.

Don’t think so. She didn’t know Joe for 7 years by 2020. And why would Matty Healy write a song with the same title two years later, with nods to Taylor in it?

Imo their love story is like in The Thorn Birds, with the gender roles reversed. Just like the cardinal chose the church and his career over Meggie and could only see her in secret, Taylor chose her billion-dollar empire over Matty Healy. When he called her bluff and left, she was broken hearted and recorded TTPD to show him she was finally ready to go all out for him. But it might have been too late.

No. You didn’t read what she wrote about the album in the cover then.

I did. I just don’t believe her, or rather I am not convinced she believes it herself. She had also said that folklore and evermore were fictional, but it’s clear now they were not. Artists are more truthful in their work than in their interviews, so I prefer to listen to her lyrics.

You claim to know Taylor better than… Taylor?

Yikes parasocial to the max.

I am sure they knew.
In Question ?, the friends who make fun of him when she kisses him in that crowded room are probably his bandmates. Then they immediately applaud too, because they have heard his bs interviews about how being with her would be emasculating but they must have also known how he felt about her.

Same with "rosé flowing with your chosen family" in The 1: he has said his bandmates are like family to him, closer even, so that's what she means by "chosen family" and drinking with him and them.

Matty was roommates with George for a while, and they also often share a room when on tour, so the line in Maroon "How'd we end up on the floor anyway?" you say. "Your roommate's cheap-ass screw-top rosé, that's how" prob refers to George.
I guess George Daniel and The 1975 like rosé, lol.

It is public knowledge they knew each other at least in 2014. They were wearing each other's merch, attending shows, etc. I am not sure what the 1975 peak has to do with any of that.

They did publicly date in late 2014, briefly,
when she went to a few of his concerts, he dedicated fallingforyou to her at one of them, then was photographed wearing the 1989 album shirt and she wore his band’s shirt out in public. And then they split up. I am guessing Tree Paine and his parting and drugs had something to do with it.

I am not sure what you mean by they peaked in 2012-2016 because their latest 3 albums released in 2018, 2020 and 2022 all went to #1 and are widely considered their best. They were on a sold out, 1.5 year long world tour in 2023-2024 and just headlined Glastonbury.

DP but Taylor over the years has cultivated a parasocial relationship with fans and (IMO) this is one of the reasons Matty doesn't want to be with her. He wants no part of the Swifties' obsessive scrutiny.

+1.
I am curious thought what Matty told them when he would write and record songs for her with them, if he admitted it or called it fictional.

I agree with that, and let’s not forget that Taylor actually used to invite fans to her home. But this poster is wild to make claims about how Taylor feels when Taylor has stated in her own words the opposite.

Also agree, that’s probably why Matty couldn’t hack it. Someone overheard him bashing the Swifties when he did that first Hawaii trip after the break up.
