I believe it. They each have a song titled Happiness, and it is about the other. In hers, she sings, "I guess it's the price I pay for SEVEN years in heaven." This is on the evermore album, released in 2020. Who knows when this particular song was written, but it means that she & Matty were meeting up or at the very least exchanging love signals since 2013, or earlier. [/quote]

Have you read or seen Pride & Prejudice?
Their story reads like a modern version of it.
Matty is sarcastic, quick witted, arrogant + has a British sense of humor, all of which get him in trouble sometimes. He has a big ego and has mentioned in interviews that dating Taylor Swift would be emasculating for him. I am sure they played cat and mouse with each other for years, too proud to admit their true feelings, esp since they were both in their 20s and immature. But the love was there based on all the songs they wrote for each other.

Separately, he used to do drugs. He is a serial dater. He is wild and uninhibited on stage. So they were both aware that he would be detrimental for her brand and good girl image. She has alluded to that in her lyrics, for example:

They’d say, "She's gone too far this time."

“I, I loved you in spite of

Illicit Affairs:

I believe Matty loved her and knew how much her fame and career mean to her, so when the public went nuts over their relationship in 2023, he left to save them both. “How dare you think it’s romantic, leaving me safe and stranded” and 
“Told me I'm better off
But I'm not

I'm not.” 💔
